Towing
Tow ing the vehicle
Screw the front towing eye (stowed in a
bag in the lugga ge compartment) fully into
the front towing point.
Attac h a tow rope 3 - or b etter still, a tow
rod 3 - to the towing eye, never to the
bumper or front suspension units.
Plac e the gear shift lever in neutra l. Switch
on the ignition to release the steering
colum n lock and to p ermit operation of the
brake lamps, horn and windscreen wipers.
Drive off slowly and avoid jerky
mov ements. Imperm issible trac tiv e forces
could da mage the vehicles.
To prevent the entry of exha ust gases from
the tow ing vehicle, switch on the air re-
circulation system and close the windows.
Seek the a ssistance of a workshop.
Towing service
Entrust your vehicle only to the towing
service of your choice and obtain an
estimate on towing costs before employing
any tow ing service. In this way you avoid
unnecessary c osts and possible insurance
problems during claim processing.
9
Warning
Never lift the vehicle using the towing
eye!
9
Warning
More brak e p edal p ressure is necessa ry
when b ra king since the brake servo unit is
operative only when the engine is
running.
Considerably greater steering force is
necessary since the power steering unit is
operative only when the engine is
running.

Tyre repair kit
Minor damag e to the tyre tread, e.g . from
foreign bodies, can be tem porarily
rep aired using the tyre repair kit.
Do not rem ov e foreign bodies from the
tyres. Damaged areas bigger than 4 m m
and da mage at the tyre rim cannot be
rep aired using the tyre repair kit.
The tyre repair k it can be used to seal small
punctures with a liquid seala nt. Use of the
sealant does not c onstitute a permanent
rep air but is designed as an emergency
measure, to allow the vehicle to be driven
while awaiting tyre replacement.
The tyre repair kit ca n also be used to
infla te the tyres to the c orrect tyre pressure
(see page 180) without using the sea lant.
For important information – see page 140.
If you have a flat tyre:
z Park on a level, firm a nd non-slippery
surface.
z Sw itch on haz ard warning lamps, a pply
hand brak e, engage rev erse gear and
switch off engine.
z Correctly set up the warning triangle 3.
Warning tria ngle – see page 135.
Nev er use the liquid sealant on more than
one tyre at a tim e.
The tyre repa ir kit is loc ated in a stowag e
compartment on the driver’s side at the
rear of the lugg age compartment.
Remove the strap from the tyre repair kit by
pressing the tabs on either side of the
buckle a nd remove the tyre repair kit from
its foam container.
9
Warning
Driv ing with tyre pressure that is too low
can cause invisible d amage to the tyres.
This dama ge c annot be remedied using
the tyre repair kit. Park v ehicle and
contact a workshop.
1. Place the tyre repair k it on level ground
and unwrap the sealant filling hose
from the compressor unit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
137
Self-help, vehicle care
2. Remove ac cessory plug from the unit by
pulling out the top pa rt of the wrapped
cord first, follow ed b y the bottom part.
Disconnect the ac cessory plug.
3. Unscrew dust cap from defective tyre
and screw sealant filling hose to valve.
4. Ensure the compressor on/off sw itc h is in
position O (off).
5. Open cover of accessory socket and
insert accessory plug of tyre rep air kit.
6. Start the engine (see pag e 17).
The eng ine must be running while using
the air c om pressor.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
138
Self-help, vehicle care
7. Switch compressor on/off sw itc h to
position I (on).
8. All of the sealant is pum ped into the tyre
and the tyre is infla ted.
Sea la nt may leak from the puncture hole
until the vehicle has been driven and the
hole sealed.
Do not run the compressor for more than
10 minutes, see "Important information"
on page 140.
9. Check the compressor pressure gauge.
If there is no reading, the sealant filling
hose to va lve connection may be faulty.
Re-check the connection.
10. Infla te the tyre to the correct pressure -
see page 180.
As the pressure gauge read ing is
slightly high w hile the c om pressor is on,
switch c om pressor off to gain an
accurate p ressure reading.
If the p rescribed tyre pressure is not
obta ined within 10 m inutes, the tyre is
too badly damaged. Switch off engine
and compressor, remove accessory
plug and unscrew seala nt filling hose
before contac ting a workshop.
11. When the correct tyre pressure has
been reached, switch compressor on/
off switch to position O (off).
12. Switch engine off and unplug the
ac cessory plug from the ac cessory
socket.
13. Disconnect sealant filling hose from
tyre va lv e a nd replace the dust ca p.
Exerc ise caution when rem oving tyre
repair kit com ponents, as they may still
be hot after use.
Wrap sea lant filling hose around
comp ressor unit in its origina l loc ation.
Stow acc essory plug in compressor unit
by wrapp ing the c ord, reconnecting the
ac cessory plug , then pushing in the
bottom p art of the wrapp ed c ord
followed by the top part into the
comp ressor unit.
Peel off the sticker containing the
m aximum p ermitted sp eed that is
affixed to the sealant bottle, and
attach it within the driver’s field of
v iew. For sticker – see page 137, Fig.
S14066.

compa rtm ent in its orig inal loca tion.
16. Collap se warning triangle 3 and stow
in luggage compartm ent –
see page 135.
17. Continue driving imm ediately so that
sealant is evenly distributed
throughout the tyre.
After driving ap prox. 10 km (6 miles)
(but no more than 10 minutes), stop
and check tyre pressure, using the
compressor:
Unlock air compressor hose from
underside of com pressor unit b y pulling
the lever up (see illustration). Detach
the hose from the sealant bottle a nd
pull out the hose.
Push a ir compressor hose direc tly on to
tyre valve and push lever down to
secure in plac e.
18. Chec k the compressor pressure gauge.
As long a s the tyre pressure has not
dropped more than 0.7 bar below the
correct tyre pressure, it may be
adjusted to the prescribed value.
Repeat the procedure until there is no
more loss of pressure.
If the tyre pressure has dropped m ore
tha n 0.7 b ar below the correct tyre
pressure, the vehicle must not b e
driven. Contact a w ork shop.
19. Stow tyre repair kit in luggage
compartment.

Bulb replacement
Halogen bulbs contain pressurised gas.
Ta ke special care when d isposing of
ha logen bulbs. Never touch the glass with
bare fingers; risk of injury.
Before replacing a bulb, switch ignition off
and turn off relevant light switch.
Only hold new bulb at base! Do not touch
the bulb glass with bare hands, otherwise
fingerprints on the g lass evaporate.
Residue b uilds up on the reflector,
eventually resulting in a dull reflector.
Inadvertently stained bulbs ma y be
cleaned with a clean non-fluffy cloth,
using alcohol or white spirits.
Replacement bulb m ust be in accordance
with information on base of d efectiv e bulb.
Do not exceed wa tta ge specified on ba se
of bulb.
Replace c ra cked or da maged bulb s as dirt
can g et insid e, coating the insid e of the
bulb a nd reducing light output.
If the headlam ps are d amaged, the light
ma y not be sufficiently d iffused a nd can
blind oncoming drivers. Vehicle vibration
can also cause incorrect headlamp a im ing .
Headlamp a iming
We recommend that hea dlamp aim ing be
carried out by a workshop, who will have
spec ia l equipment.
