Do any of the park brake cables accessible on
the underside of the vehicle require
replacement?
Go to Step 15

Replace any of the park brake cables that do
not have free movement (not releasing
properly). Refer to the following procedures as
necessary:
Parking Brake Lever Pedal Assembly
Replacement
(The front park brake cable and the park
brake pedal are replaced as an assembly.)
Parking Brake Intermediate Cable
Replacement (JD9, JF3, JF7)
Parking Brake Rear Cable
Replacement - Left Side (JF3, JF7) or
Parking Brake Rear Cable
Replacement - Left Side (JD9)
Parking Brake Rear Cable
Replacement - Right Side (JF3, JF7) or
Parking Brake Rear Cable
Replacement - Right Side (JD9)
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 19

1. Disconnect the park brake release handle
assembly cable from the park brake pedal
assembly and check for free movement.
2. Replace the park brake release handle
assembly if the release cable does not have
free movement. Refer to Parking Brake
Release Handle Assembly
Replacement.
Did you find and correct a condition?
Go to Step 19
Go to Step 17
Inspect the park brake pedal assembly for
proper operation and replace as necessary.

PARKING BRAKE SHOE INSPECTION
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and
Installation .
3. Remove the rear brake caliper bracket with the rear brake caliper. Refer to Rear Brake
Caliper Bracket Replacement (JH6, JH7) or Rear Brake Caliper Bracket
Replacement (JD9) .
4. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9) or Rear
Brake Rotor Replacement (JH6) or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH7) .
5. Inspect and replace the park brake shoe and lining if any of the following conditions are
found:
Excessive wear indicated by the park brake lining being worn down to the shoe
Park brake lining cracking

Refer to Parking Brake Lever Pedal
Assembly Replacement.

1. Replace the component that is used to
adjust the park brake system. Refer to
Parking Brake Lever Pedal Assembly
Replacement.
2. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park
Brake Adjustment (Drum Brake) or
Park Brake Adjustment (Disc Brake).
Did you complete the replacement and
adjustment?
Go to Step 19

Install or connect any components that were
removed or disconnected during diagnosis.

CAUTION: Refer to Brake Dust Caution .
IMPORTANT: DO NOT apply the park brake pedal with the rotors removed.

Oil or fluid contamination of the park brake lining
6. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment (Drum Brake) or Park
Brake Adjustment (Disc Brake).
7. Install the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9) or Rear
Brake Rotor Replacement (JH6) or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH7) .
8. Install the rear brake caliper with the rear brake caliper bracket. Refer to Rear Brake
Caliper Bracket Replacement (JH6, JH7) or Rear Brake Caliper Bracket
Replacement (JD9) .
9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
10. Lower the vehicle.

PARKING BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT (JH6, JH7)
Preliminary Procedures
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
2. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9) or Rear
Brake Rotor Replacement (JH6) or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH7) .
3. Disconnect the park brake cable from the actuator.
Refer to Brake Dust Caution .

Park Brake Shoe Retaining Clip Bolt (Qty: 2)
Tighten: 15 N.m (11 lb ft)
NOTE:
Refer to Fastener Notice .

Park Brake Shoe and Lining
Procedure
1. To remove and install the park brake shoe, place the open end of the park
brake shoe over the axle flange and rotate it until the shoe has cleared the
flange.
2. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the
contact areas of the brake shoe and the backing plate.
3. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment (Drum Brake)
or Park Brake Adjustment (Disc Brake).
