REAR TIMING CHAIN CASE
• Apply liquid gasket on installation position of water pump and cylinder head very completely.
d.
Align rear timing chain case with dowel pins (right and left) on cylinder block and install rear timing chain
case.
• Make sure O-rings stay in place during installation to cylinder block, cylinder head and camshaft bracket
(No. 1).
e.
Tighten bolts in numerical order as shown.
• There are two type of bolts with different torque specifications.
Refer to the following for installing bolts.
f.
After all bolts are tightened, retighten them to the specified torque in numerical order as shown.
• If liquid gasket protrudes, wipe it off immediately.

After installing rear timing chain case, check the surface height
difference between following parts on oil pan (upper) mounting
surface.
• If not within the standard, repeat the installation procedure.
2.
Install water pump with new O-rings, if removed. Refer to
CO-49, "Removal and Installation"
.
3.
Install timing chains and related components. Refer to
EM-173, "Removal and Installation"
4.
Install front timing chain case. Refer to
EM-164, "Removal and Installation"
5.
Install oil pan (upper) and (lower). Refer to
EM-149, "Removal and Installation"
.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
Inspection for Leaks
The following are procedures for checking fluid leaks, lubricant leaks and exhaust gases leaks.
• Before starting engine, check oil/fluid levels including engine coolant and engine oil. If less than required
quantity, fill to the specified level. Refer to
MA-16, "For North America: Fluids and Lubricants"
Mexico: Fluids and Lubricants"
• Run engine to check for unusual noise and vibration.
NOTE:
If hydraulic pressure inside timing chain tensioner drops after removal/installation, slack in the guide may
generate a pounding noise during and just after engine start. However, this is normal. Noise will stop after
hydraulic pressure rises.
• Warm up engine thoroughly to make sure there is no leakage of fuel, exhaust gases, or any oil/fluids includ-
ing engine oil and engine coolant.
• Bleed air from lines and hoses of applicable lines, such as in cooling system.
• After cooling down engine, again check oil/fluid levels including engine oil and engine coolant. Refill to the
specified level, if necessary.
Summary of the inspection items:
* Transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, etc.

EM-173, "Removal and Installation"
.
6.
Remove camshaft position sensor (PHASE) (right and left
banks) from cylinder head back side.
CAUTION:
• Handle carefully to avoid dropping and shocks.
• Do not disassemble.
• Do not allow metal powder to adhere to magnetic part at
sensor tip.
• Do not place sensors in a location where they are
exposed to magnetism.
7.
Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valves.
• Discard intake valve timing control solenoid valve gaskets and
use new gaskets for installation.
8.
Remove camshaft brackets.
