DIAGNOSTIC WORKSHEET
There are many operating conditions that lead to the malfunction of
engine components. A good grasp of such conditions can make trou-
ble-shooting faster and more accurate.
In general, each customer feels differently about an incident. It is
important to fully understand the symptoms or conditions for a cus-
tomer complaint.
Utilize a diagnostic worksheet like the one on
in order to organize all the information for troubleshooting.
Some conditions may cause the MIL to come on steady or blink and
DTC to be detected. Examples:
●
Vehicle ran out of fuel, which caused the engine to misfire.
●
Fuel filler cap was left off or incorrectly screwed on, allowing fuel
to evaporate into the atmosphere.

Fail-safe Chart
UBS00D1E
The ECM enters fail-safe mode if any of the following malfunctions is detected due to the open or short circuit.
When the ECM enters the fail-safe mode, the MIL illuminates.
DTC No.
Detected items
Engine operating condition in fail-safe mode
CONSULT-II

P0102
P0103
Mass air flow sensor circuit
Engine speed will not rise more than 2,400 rpm due to the fuel cut.
P0112
P0113
Intake air temperature sen-
sor
The ECM functions on the assumption that the intake air temperature is 25
°C (77°F).
P0117
P0118
Engine coolant temperature
sensor circuit
Engine coolant temperature will be determined by ECM based on the time after turning
ignition switch to ON or START.
CONSULT-II displays the engine coolant temperature decided by ECM.
Condition

P0122
P0123
Throttle position sensor cir-
cuit
Throttle position will be determined based on the injected fuel amount and the engine
speed. Therefore, acceleration will be poor.

access ECM
ECM
ECM fail-safe activating condition
The computing function of the ECM was judged to be malfunctioning.
When the fail-safe system activates (i.e., if the ECM detects a malfunction condition in
the CPU of ECM), the MIL on the instrument panel lights to warn the driver.
However it is not possible to access ECM and DTC cannot be confirmed.
Engine control with fail-safe
When ECM fail-safe is operating, fuel injection, ignition timing, fuel pump operation and
IACV-AAC valve operation are controlled under certain limitations.
ECM fail-safe operation
Engine speed
Engine speed will not rise more than 3,000 rpm
Fuel injection
Simultaneous multiport fuel injection system
Ignition timing
Ignition timing is fixed at the preset valve
Fuel pump
Fuel pump relay is “ON” when engine is running
and “OFF” when engine stalls
IACV-AAC valve
Full open
Replace ECM, if ECM fail-safe condition is confirmed.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS
Basic Inspection
UBS00D1F
1.
INSPECTION START
1.
Check service records for any recent repairs that may indicate a related malfunction, or a current need for
scheduled maintenance.
2.
Open engine hood and check the following:
–
Harness connectors for improper connections
–
Wiring harness for improper connections, pinches and cut
–
Vacuum hoses for splits, kinks and improper connections
–
Hoses and ducts for leaks
–
Air cleaner clogging
–
Gasket
3.
Confirm that electrical or mechanical loads are not applied.
–
Headlamp switch is OFF.
–
Air conditioner switch is OFF.
–
Rear window defogger switch is OFF.
–
Steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position, etc.
4.
Start engine and warm it up until engine coolant temperature
indicator points the middle of gauge.
Ensure engine stays below 1,000 rpm.
5.
Run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no
load.
6.
Make sure that no DTC is displayed with CONSULT-II or GST.
OK or NG
OK (With CONSULT-II) >> GO TO 2.
OK (With GST) >> GO TO 4.
NG >> Repair or replace components as necessary according
to corresponding Diagnostic Procedure.
2.
CONNECT CONSULT-II TO THE VEHICLE
Connect “CONSULT-II” and CONSULT-II CONVERTER to the data
link connector and select “ENGINE” from the menu. Refer to
>> GO TO 3.
