DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
SPEED CONTROL
The speed control system consists of the following components:
z
speed control actuator cable (9A825)
z
deactivator switch
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
SPEED CONTROL
Refer to CRUISE CONTROL for wiring diagram.
NOTE:
It is normal for the engine rpm to increase slightly and then drop off slowly
when the clutch pedal is depressed during operation.

Principles of Operation
The speed control system is designed to maintain vehicle speed between 48 and 200 km/h (30 and 125 mph).
z
output shaft sensor (OSS)
z
speed control actuator switches (9C888)
z
brake pedal position (BPP) switch
z
speed control servo (9C735)
z
clutch pedal position switch
Whenever the system is engaged and active, a speed control set indicator will be illuminated in the instrument
cluster.

The brake pedal position (BPP) switch is normally closed to ground. When the brake pedal is applied with the
speed control system engaged, the BPP switch closes (to battery voltage), putting the speed control in stand-by
mode.
Normally, when the brake pedal is depressed, the speed control module deactivates the speed control system.
Under increased brake pedal effort, the deactivator switch, a normally closed switch, will open and remove
power to the speed control servo clutch, releasing the throttle independently of the speed control module
The air bag sliding contact provides the electrical interface between the steering column wiring and the speed
control switches in the steering wheel.
The inputs to the speed control servo are the:
z
vehicle speed signal
z
speed control switches
z
brake pedal position (BPP) switch
z
clutch pedal position (CPP) switch
z
deactivator switch
The outputs of the speed control servo are the:
z
speed control indicator
z
speed control cable controlled throttle position
Inspection and Verification
1. Verify the customer concern by operating the speed control system.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
Visual Inspection Chart
NOTE:
A redundant brake deactivator switch is provided as an additional safety
feature.
NOTE:
The speed control module is integral to the speed control servo.
NOTE:
If any concerns are noted with the speedometer, stoplamps or horn, address
those concerns by referring to their associated articles before continuing speed
control diagnosis.

3. If the fault is not visually evident, go to self-test diagnostics.
Self-Test Diagnostics
1. Enter self-test diagnostics by depressing the speed control OFF switch while turning the ignition key ON,
making sure the engine does not start and is not running. The speed control indicator on the instrument
panel will flash once to indicate that speed control module entered the diagnostic mode. Five additional
flashes at this point indicate a defective speed control servo. Release the OFF switch.
2. Press the remaining switches in this sequence: ON, RESUME, COAST and SET/ACCEL.
WARNING:
This test is a key on engine off (KOEO) test only that is conducted in park
only with emergency brake fully engaged.
