OIL PAN (Continued)
INSTALLATION
(1) Release tension from oil pump chain tensioner
and install chain on oil pump sprocket (Fig. 33).
(2) Position oil pump on cylinder block and install
retaining bolts (Fig. 33). Torque bolts to 18N·m(13

OIL JET
DESCRIPTION
There are four oil jets installed in the engine block
(Fig. 34). These oil jets are used to cool and lubricate
the piston assemblies.
REMOVAL
The engine must be removed from the vehicle and
completely dissassembled to replace the oil jets.
(1) Remove engine from vehicle.
(2) Completely dissassemble engine.
(3) Using an extraction claw and a slide hammer,
remove the oil jets from engine block.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install oil jet into special tool #8924.
(2) Align oil jet in location in engine block.
(3) Drive oil jets into block using special tool #8924
until oil jet is fully seated into engine block (Fig. 35).
(4) Reassemble engine.
(5) Install engine into vehicle.
BALANCE SHAFT
DESCRIPTION
The 2.2L engine is equipped with two nodular cast
iron balance shafts installed in a cast iron carrier
attached to the lower cylinder block (Fig. 36).
OPERATION
The balance shafts are driven by the crankshaft
via a roller chain and sprockets. The balance shafts
are connected by helical gears. The dual counter
rotating shafts decrease second order vertical shak-
ing forces caused by component movement.

REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect negative battery cable.
(2) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(3) Remove engine compartment lower silencer
and accessory drive belt splash shield (Fig. 37).
(4) Drain engine oil.
(5) Remove oil pan (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/LUBRI-
CATION/OIL PAN - REMOVAL).
(6) Remove balance shaft retaining bolts and
remove assembly from engine block (Fig. 38).
INSTALLATION
Before the balance shaft assembly can be installed,
the balance shaft shim thickness must be deter-
mined. Follow steps below to determine shim thick-
ness.
DETERMINING BALANCE SHAFT SHIM THICKNESS
(1) Measure and determine dimensions A and B by
measuring in the center of the gears. (Fig. 39). Mea-
sure 4 times approximately 90° apart. Determine
mean of the 4 measurments
(2) After measuring dimension A and B, use chart
below to determine shims needed for balance shaft
assembly (Fig. 40).
