• Never impact the spiral cable.
• Replace the spiral cable if it has been dropped or sus-

tained an impact.

• Never disassemble the spiral cable.
• Never apply lubricant to the spiral cable.
• Never allow oil, grease, detergent, or water to come in

contact with the spiral cable.

INSTALLATION

Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
• The turn signal lever must be in the neutral position for spiral cable installation.
• Set the spiral cable neutral position by carefully turning the spiral

cable clockwise to the end position. Turn the spiral cable counter-
clockwise 2.5 turns stopping when the locating pin (B) is at the top
most position and confirm that a yellow indicator with a vertical
black line will be shown in the window (A).
NOTE:
If a new service part is installed, the neutral position is already set
with a stopper clip in place and should not be adjusted after the
stopper clip is removed. Make sure the stopper is removed before
installing the steering wheel.

• During steering wheel installation, make sure the locating pin hole

is aligned with the locating pin (B) of the spiral cable.

• Adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor. Refer to

BRC-64, "Work Procedure"

.

CAUTION:

• The spiral cable may snap during steering operation if the spiral cable is installed in an improper

position.

• Never over turn the spiral cable or go beyond the maximum number of turns required. (This will

cause the cable to snap.)

• The turn signal lever must be in the neutral position for spiral cable installation.
• Never apply lubricant to the spiral cable.
• Never allow oil, grease, detergent or water to come in contact with the spiral cable.
• After the work is completed, check that no system malfunction is detected by air bag warning lamp.
• If a malfunction is detected by the air bag warning lamp, after repair or replacement of the malfunc-

tioning parts, reset the memory using self-diagnosis or CONSULT. Refer to

INFOID:0000000010478331

WARNING:

• Before servicing, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 3 minutes

or more.

• Before disconnecting the air bag diagnosis sensor unit harness connectors, be sure to disconnect

each harness connector of the air bag module and pre-tensioner seat belt to prevent air bag deploy-
ment by static electricity and pre-temsioner seat belt operation.

• Never use the air tools or electric tools for servicing.
• When replacing the air bag diagnosis sensor unit, always check with the parts department for the lat-

est parts information. Installing an incorrect air bag diagnosis sensor unit may or may not cause the
air bag warning lamp to illuminate and may cause incorrect deployment of the supplemental air bags
and seat belt pre-tensioners in a collision resulting in serious personal injury or death.

REMOVAL

1.

Always check the air bag diagnosis sensor unit ECU discriminated number (identification number) using
CONSULT.

2.

Remove center console assembly. Refer to

IP-19, "Removal and Installation"

.

3.

Disconnect the harness connectors for the following SRS components:

SR-21, "Removal and Installation"

nated number (identification number) of the new replacement air bag diagnosis sensor unit matches
the ECU discriminated number (identification number) of the replaced (old) air bag diagnosis sensor
unit.

NOTE:
If the ECU discriminated number of the new replacement air bag diagnosis sensor unit differs from the ECU
discriminated number of the replaced air bag diagnosis sensor unit, reconfirm the parts information and verify

CHECKING DEPLOYMENT TOOL

Connecting to Battery

CAUTION:

The battery must show voltage of 9.6 V or more.
Remove the battery from the vehicle and place it on dry wood blocks
approximately 5.0 m (16.4 ft) away from the vehicle.
• Wait 3 minutes after the vehicle battery is disconnected before pro-

ceeding.

• Connect red clip of deployment tool (A) to battery positive terminal

and black clip to negative terminal.

Check that the polarity is correct. The right side lamp in the
tool, marked “deployment tool power”, should illuminate with a
green light. If the right side lamp illuminates red, reverse the
connections to the battery.

Deployment Tool Check

Press the deployment tool switch (C) to the ON position. The left
side lamp in the tool, marked “air bag connector voltage” should illu-
minate (B). If it does not illuminate, replace the deployment tool (A).

Air Bag Deployment Tool Lamp Illumination Chart (Battery Connected)

*: If this lamp illuminates red, the tool is connected to the battery incorrectly. Reverse the connections and check that the lamp illumi-
nates green.

DEPLOYMENT OF DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE (OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE)

1.

Unless the vehicle is being scrapped, deploying the air bag in
the vehicle is not recommended. This may cause damage to the
vehicle interior.
Anchor air bag module bracket (SST: KV99105300) (A) in a vice
secured to a firm foundation deployment.

2.

Using wire (D), secure driver air bag module (1) to air bag mod-
ule bracket (SST: KV99105300) (A) at two places.

CAUTION:

Use wire of at least 1.0 mm (0.039 in) diameter.

3.

Firmly secure air bag module bracket (SST: KV99105300) with
driver air bag module attached, in a vise.

4.

Connect deployment tool adapter (SST: KV99110500) yellow
connector (C) to driver air bag module and deployment tool con-
nector (SST: KV99106400) (B).

5.

Connect red clip of deployment tool (A) to battery positive termi-
nal and black clip to negative terminal (B).

6.

The lamp on the right side of the tool, marked “deployment tool
power”, should illuminate green, not red.

7.

Press the button on the deployment tool. The left side lamp on
the tool, marked “air bag connector voltage”, illuminates and the
air bag module (1) deploys.

CAUTION:

When deploying the driver air bag module, stand at least 5.0
m (16.4 ft) away from the air bag module.

DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE : Disposal

INFOID:0000000010499322

DISPOSING OF AIR BAG MODULE AND SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER

Deployed air bag module, seat belt pre-tensioner, and lap pre-tensioner are very hot. Before disposing of air
bag module and seat belt pre-tensioner, wait at least 30 minutes, and 10 minutes, respectively. Seal them in a
plastic bag before disposal.

CAUTION:

• Never apply water to a deployed air bag module or seat belt

pre-tensioner or lap pre-tensioner.

• Wear gloves when handling a deployed air bag module or seat

belt pre-tensioner or lap pre-tensioner.

• No poisonous gas is produced upon air bag module deploy-

ment. However, be careful not to inhale gas since it irritates
the throat and can cause choking.

• Never disassemble air bag module, seat belt pre-tensioner

and lap pre-tensioner.

• Air bag module, seat belt pre-tensioner and lap pre-tensioner

cannot be reused.

• Wash your hands clean after the work is complete.
