Introduction
NMEC0657
The ECM has an on board diagnostic system, which detects malfunctions related to engine sensors or actua-
tors. Self-diagnosis items are listed in “TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS — INDEX”, EC-4.
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel lights up when the ECM enters fail-safe mode
(Refer to EC-67.).
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

HOW TO READ DTC
NMEC0658S01
Malfunction items can be confirmed by the following methods.
With CONSULT-II
NMEC0658S0101
CONSULT-II displays the malfunctioning component or system.
Examples: CAMSHAFT POSI SEN, MASS AIR FLOW SEN etc.
Without CONSULT-II
NMEC0658S0102
The number of blinks of the malfunction indicator lamp in the Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-Diagnostic Results)
indicates the DTC. Examples: 0101, 1501 etc.
I
Output of a DTC indicates a malfunction. However, Mode II does not indicate whether the malfunc-
tion is still occurring or has occurred in the past and has returned to normal.
CONSULT-II can identify malfunction status as shown below. Therefore, using CONSULT-II (if avail-
able) is recommended.
SEF560X
A sample of CONSULT-II display is shown at above. The malfunction is displayed in “SELF-DIAGNOSTIC
RESULTS” mode of CONSULT-II. Time data indicates how many times the vehicle was driven after the last
detection of a malfunction.
If the malfunction is being detected currently, the time data will be “0”.
HOW TO ERASE DTC
NMEC0658S03
With CONSULT-II
NMEC0658S0301
1. If the ignition switch stays “ON” after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch “OFF” once. Wait at least
5 seconds and then turn it “ON” (engine stopped) again.
2. Touch “ENGINE”.
3. Touch “SELF-DIAG RESULTS”.
4. Touch “ERASE”. (The DTC in the ECM will be erased.)

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Introduction
EC-33
SEC329C
DTC in the ECM can be erased by selecting “ERASE” in the “SELF-DIAG RESULTS” mode with CONSULT-
II.
No Tools
NMEC0658S0302
1. If the ignition switch stays “ON” after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch “OFF” once. Wait at least
5 seconds and then turn it “ON” (engine stopped) again.
2. Change the diagnostic test mode from Mode II to Mode I by using the data link connector. (See EC-36.)
DTC in the ECM can be erased by changing the diagnostic test mode.
I
If the battery is disconnected, DTC will be lost after approx. 24 hours.
I
Erasing DTC using CONSULT-II is easier and quicker than switching the diagnostic test mode using
the data link connector.
I
Be careful not to erase the stored memory before starting trouble diagnoses.
NATS (NISSAN ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM)
NMEC0658S05
SEF252Z
I
If the security indicator lights up with the ignition switch in the “ON” position or “NATS MALFUNC-
TION” is displayed on “SELF-DIAG RESULTS” screen, perform self-diagnostic results mode with
CONSULT-II using NATS program card. Refer to EL-134, “NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System)”.
I
Confirm no self-diagnostic results of NATS is displayed before touching “ERASE” in “SELF-DIAG
RESULTS” mode with CONSULT-II.
I
When replacing ECM, initialization of NATS system and registration of all NATS ignition key IDs
must be carried out with CONSULT-II using NATS program card.
Therefore, be sure to receive all keys from vehicle owner. Regarding the procedures of NATS ini-
tialization and NATS ignition key ID registration, refer to CONSULT-II operation manual, NATS.
