"BELTS" warning lamp comes on and an audio warning is given when ignition switch is in "ON" position
with either front door open and/or driver's safety belt not fastened. Warning lamp goes out when driver's
safety belt is fastened.

• Turn signal indicators

Turn signal indicators illuminate when right or left turn signal controls are operated.

Instrument panel

Instrument panel houses instrument cluster, center panel and a number of special switches and controls.
Instrument panelelectrical system is discussed in 1999 CARENS Wiring Diagram Manual. Ducts installed in
instrument panel are discussed in this section.

Radio and antenna cable

When a radio is installed in vehicle, user instructions are supplied. Radio is located in instrument panel.
Antenna and electrical connections are located at rear of unit. Antenna cable connects to radio. It is routed
behind instrument panel andconnects to antenna. Radio receives signals through antenna cable from antenna.
It is necessary to remove radio when instrument panel is removed.

Ventilation control panel

Ventilation control panel provides control of heating and air conditioning and is mounted in instrument panel.
There arecontrol cables from ventilation control panel that attach to heater assembly. Part of instrument panel
must be removed for access to where cables attach to heater or air conditioner units.

Circuit operation (Low oil pressure indicator)

With the ignition switch in "ON", battery voltage is applied to the low oil pressure indicator in the instrument
clusterthrough the "METER" fuse and G/W wire. The indicator is grounded through the oil pressure switch
whenever the oil pressure is below 0.7~2.6 kg/cm² at 1000rpm. The bulb illuminates to warn the driver.

Fuel gauge

The magnetic coils inside the instrument cluster control the pointer of the fuel gauge whose circuit is grounded
permanently. Ground also is provided to the fuel gauge sender, which acts as a variable resistor. When the fuel
in the tank is full, the resistance is low, and the pointer indicates full.When the fuel in the tank is low, the
resistance is high, and the pointer indicates empty.

Fuel gauge sender

A float attached to a variable resistor is mounted in the fuel tank. With a full tank, the float arm sits at the top of
the tank and the variable resistance value is high.As the float drops, so does the resistance value. The sender
operatesthe fuel gauge.

Engine coolant temperature gauge

The coolant temperature gauge pointer is moved by the magnetic field of two coils at right angles to each
other.Battery voltage is applied to the "C" coil from the "METER" fuse. The circuit then divides into two.One
path continues through the H coil and the to ground.
The other path goes through the variable resistance engine coolant temperature sender and the to ground.
When the coolant temperature is high, the resistance of the engine coolant temperature sender is low and less
current flows through the "H" coil, pushing the pointer toward "H". When the coolant temperature is low, the
resistance of the engine coolant temperature sender is high and more current flows through the "H" coil
pushing the pointer toward "C". With two coils operating the pointer, the gauge is not affected by changes in the
voltage.

Engine coolant temperature sender

The engine coolant temperature sender is thermistor, in which resistance decreases as engine coolant
temperature increases.

Tachometer

A solid state circuit controls tachometer. With the engine running, ignition coil pulses proportional to engine
speed are read into the solid state circuits, which output the engine speed in RPM through the tachometer.

Speedometer

A solid sate circuit controls the speedometer. As the wheels are turned, an electrical signal is sent from the
vehicle speed sensor to the speedometer to the speedometer assembly. The speedometer registers the speed
of the vehicle.

Tachometer

1. Check if the indication of tachometer is within the allowance range by use of tachometer tester.
