The driver's attention level is dis-
played on the scale of 1 to 5. The
lower the number is, the more inat-
tentive the driver is.

The number decreases when the
driver does not take a break for a
certain period of time.

The number increases when the
driver attentively drives for a cer-
tain period of time.

When the driver turns on the sys-
tem while driving, it displays 'Last
Break time'.

Taking a break

The "Consider taking a break" mes-
sage appears on the LCD display and
a warning sounds suggest that the
driver take a break when the driver's
attention level is below 1.

The Driver Attention Warning sys-
tem will not suggest a break, when
the total driving time is shorter than
10 minutes.

NOTICE

The Driver Attention Warning sys-
tem utilizes the camera sensor on
the front windshield for its opera-
tion.
To keep the camera sensor in the
best condition, you should observe
the followings:
䳜 Do not place any reflective objects

(i.e. white paper, mirror) over the
dashboard. Any light reflection
may prevent the Driver Attention
Warning (DAW) system from
functioning properly.

䳜 Pay extreme caution to keep the

camera sensor dry.

䳜 Do not arbitrarily disassemble the

camera assembly, or apply any
impact on the camera assembly.

䳜 Playing the vehicle audio system

at high volume may prevent occu-
pants from hearing the Driver
Attention Warning system warn-
ing sounds.

CAUTION

The Driver Attention Warning sys-
tem may not provide alerts in the
following situations:
䳜 The lane detection performance is

limited. (For more information,
refer to "Lane Keeping Assist
(LKA) System (if equipped)" on
page 5-127.)

䳜 The vehicle is erratically driven or

is abruptly turned for obstacle
avoidance (e.g. construction area,
other vehicles, fallen objects,
bumpy road).

䳜 Forward drivability of the vehicle

is severely undermined (possibly
due to wide variation in tire pres-
sures, uneven tire wear-out, toe-
in/toe-out alignment).

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) Sys-
tem (if equipped)

The Lane Keeping Assist system is
designed to detect the lane markers
on the road with a front view cam-
era at the front windshield, and
assists the driver's steering to help
keep the vehicle in the lanes.

When the system detects the vehi-
cle straying from its lane, it alerts
the driver with a visual and audible
warning, while applying a slight
countersteering torque, trying to
prevent the vehicle from moving out
of its lane.

WARNING

The Lane Keeping Assist System is a
supplemental system and is not a
substitute for safe driving practices.
It is the responsibility of the driver
to always pay attention and drive
safely.

WARNING

䳜 Driver is responsible for being

aware of surroundings and steer-
ing the vehicle for safe driving
practices.

䳜 Do not turn the steering wheel

suddenly when the steering wheel
is being assisted by the system.

NOTICE

䳜 When you replace the windshield

glass, front view camera or sys-
tem, take your vehicle to an
authorized Kia dealer and have
the system checked to need a cal-
ibration.

䳜 The system is designed to detect

lane markers using a front view
camera. If the lane markers are
hard to detect, then the system
may be limited. Always be cau-
tious when using the system.

䳜 When the lane markers are hard

to detect, please refer to "Driver's
Attention" on page 5-132.

䳜 Do not remove or damage parts

of the LKA system.

䳜 Do not place objects on the dash-

board that reflects light such as
mirrors, white paper, etc. This
may prevent the LKA system
from functioning properly.

䳜 You may not hear warning sound

of LKA if the audio volume is high.

tem will stop controlling the
steering wheel after the hands
off alarm. If you drive with your
hands on the steering wheel
again, the control will be activated
again.

䳜 If the vehicle speed is high, steer-

ing torque for assistance may not
be enough to keep your vehicle
within the lane. If so, the vehicle
may move out of its lane. Obey
speed limit when using LKA.

䳜 If you attach objects to the steer-

ing wheel, the system may not
assist steering.

䳜 If you attach objects to the steer-

ing wheel, hands off alarm may

To activate/deactivate the LKA, with
the ignition switch or START/STOP
button in the ON position, take the
following steps:

䳜 Press the LKA button located on

the instrument panel on the lower
left hand side of the driver.
The indicator in the cluster display
will initially illuminate white.
If the indicator (white) was acti-
vated in the previous vehicle ON,
the system turns on automati-
cally.

If you press the LKA button again,
the indicator on the cluster display
will go off.

The color of indicator will change
depend on the condition of LKA.
䳜 White: Sensor does not detect the

lane marker or vehicle speed is
less than 64 km/h (40 mph).

䳜 Green: Sensor detects the lane

marker and system is able to con-
trol the steering.

䳜 If the function is turned off in

User settings, the system will not
operate. If you select LDW / LKA /

If the vehicle moves out its lane
because steering torque for assis-
tance is not enough, the lane indica-
tor will blink.

If all the conditions to activate LKA
are not satisfied, the system will
convert to Lane Departure Warning
(LDW) and warn the driver only
when the driver crosses the lane
markers. In this scenario, the LDW
system does not provide any steer-
ing inputs into the vehicle for you.
Accordingly, you must take the nec-
essary steps to maintain control of
the vehicle and keep it within the
lanes.

Keep hands on steering wheel
(When Active LKA is activated, if
equipped)

If the driver takes hands off the
steering wheel for several seconds
while the Active LKA is activated,
the system will warn the driver.

If the driver still does not have their
hands on the steering wheel after
several seconds, the system will
only warn the driver when the driver
crosses the lane lines. In this sce-
nario, the system does not provide
any steering inputs into the vehicle
for you. Accordingly, you must take
the necessary steps to maintain

while the LKA is activated, the sys-
tem will warn the driver.

WARNING

䳜 The warning message may

appear late according to road
conditions. Therefore, always
have your hands on the steering
wheel while driving.

䳜 If you hold the steering wheel

lightly, the system would gener-
ate hands off warning because
LKA can treat the situation as you
do not grab the wheel.

this case, have the system checked
by authorized Kia dealer.

When there is a problem with the
system do one of the following:
䳜 Turn the system on after turning

the vehicle off and on again.

䳜 Check if the ignition switch or

START/STOP button is in the ON
position.

䳜 Check if the system is affected by

the weather. (ex: fog, heavy rain,
etc.)

䳜 Check if there is foreign matter

covering the camera lens

If the problem is not solved, take
your vehicle to an authorized Kia
dealer and have the system
checked.

LKA function change

The driver can change LKA to Lane
Departure Warning System (LDWS)
or change the LKA mode between
Active LKA, LKA, LDW, OFF from the
User Settings Mode on the LCD dis-
play.

Active LKA

The active LKA mode provides more
frequent steering wheel control in
comparison with the LKA mode.
Active LKA can reduce the driver's
fatigue to assist the steering for
maintaining the vehicle in the middle
of the lane.

LKA

The LKA mode guides the driver to
keep the vehicle within the lanes. It
rarely controls the steering wheel,
when the vehicle drives well inside
the lanes. However, it starts to con-
trol the steering wheel, when the
vehicle is about to deviate from the
lanes.

Lane Departure

LDW alerts the driver with a visual
and acoustic warning when the sys-
tem detects the vehicle leaving the
lane. In this mode, the steering
wheel will not be controlled. When
the vehicle's front wheel contacts
the inside edge of lane line, LKA
issues the lane departure warning.

OFF

LKA/LDW function is OFF.

Driving your vehicle

Economical operation

Economical operation

Your vehicle's fuel economy depends
mainly on your style of driving,
where you drive and when you drive.

Each of these factors affects how
many kilometers (miles) you can get
from a liter (gallon) of fuel.To oper-
ate your vehicle as economically as
possible, use the following driving
suggestions to help save money in
both fuel and repairs:
䳜 Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a

moderate rate. Don't make "jack-
rabbit" starts or full-throttle
shifts and maintain a steady
cruising speed. Don't race
between stoplights. Try to adjust
your speed to the traffic so you
don't have to change speeds
unnecessarily. Avoid heavy traffic
whenever possible. Always main-
tain a safe distance from other
vehicles so you can avoid unnec-
essary braking. This also reduces
brake wear.

䳜 Drive at a moderate speed. The

faster you drive, the more fuel
your vehicle uses. Driving at a
moderate speed, especially on the
highway, is one of the most
effective ways to reduce fuel con-
sumption.

䳜 Don't "ride" the brake pedal. This

can increase fuel consumption
and also increase wear on these
components. In addition, driving
with your foot resting on the
brake pedal may cause the brakes
to overheat, which reduces their
effectiveness and may lead to
more serious consequences.

䳜 Take care of your tires. Keep

them inflated to the recom-
mended pressure. Incorrect infla-
tion, either too much or too little,
results in unnecessary tire wear.
Check the tire pressures at least
once a month.

䳜 Be sure that the wheels are

aligned correctly. Improper align-
ment can result from hitting
curbs or driving too fast over
irregular surfaces. Poor alignment
causes faster tire wear and may
also result in other problems as
well as greater fuel consumption.

䳜 Keep your vehicle in good condi-

tion. For better fuel economy and
reduced maintenance costs,
maintain your vehicle in accor-
dance with "Scheduled mainte-
nance service" on page 7-8. If you
drive your vehicle in severe condi-
tions, more frequent maintenance
is required (Refer to "Maintenance
Under Severe Usage Conditions -
Non Turbo Models" on page 7-11
for details).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Driving your vehicle

136

5

Economical operation

䳜 Keep your vehicle clean. For maxi-

mum service, your vehicle should
be kept clean and free of corro-
sive materials. It is especially
important that mud, dirt, ice, etc.
not be allowed to accumulate on
the underside of the vehicle. This
extra weight can result in
increased fuel consumption and
also contribute to corrosion.

䳜 Travel lightly. Don't carry unnec-

essary weight in your vehi-
cle.Weight reduces fuel economy.

䳜 Don't let the engine idle longer

than necessary. If you are waiting
(and not in traffic), turn off your
engine and restart only when
you're ready to go.

䳜 Remember, your vehicle does not

require extended warm-up. After
the engine has started, allow the
engine to run for 10 to 20 sec-
onds prior to placing the vehicle in
gear. In very cold weather, how-
ever, give your engine a slightly
longer warm-up period.

䳜 Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the

engine. Lugging is driving too
slowly in a very high gear result-
ing in engine bucking. If this hap-
pens, shift to a lower gear. Over-
revving is racing the engine
beyond its safe limit. This can be
avoided by shifting at the recom-
mended speed.

䳜 Use your air conditioning spar-

ingly. The air conditioning system
is operated by engine power so
your fuel economy is reduced
when you use it.

䳜 Open windows at high speeds can

reduce fuel economy.

䳜 Fuel economy is less in cross-

winds and headwinds. To help off-
set some of this loss, slow down
when driving in these conditions.

Keeping a vehicle in good operating
condition is important both for
economy and safety. Therefore,
have an authorized Kia dealer per-
form scheduled inspections and
maintenance.

WARNING

Engine off during motion
Never turn the engine off to coast
down hills or anytime the vehicle is
in motion. The power steering and
power brakes will not function prop-
erly without the engine running. In
addition, turning off the ignition
while driving could engage the
steering wheel lock resulting in loss
of vehicle steering. Keep the engine
on and downshift to an appropriate
gear for engine braking effect.

Driving your vehicle

Special driving conditions

Special driving conditions

If driving conditions deteriorate due
to poor weather or road conditions,
you should pay even more attention
than usual to your driving.

Hazardous driving conditions

When hazardous driving conditions
are encountered such as water,
snow, ice, mud, sand, or similar haz-
ards, follow these suggestions:
䳜 Drive cautiously and allow extra

distance for braking.

䳜 Avoid sudden braking or steering.
䳜 When braking with non-ABS

brakes pump the brake pedal with
a light up-and-down motion until
the vehicle is stopped.

䳜 Do not pump the brake pedal on a

vehicle equipped with ABS.

䳜 If stalled in snow, mud, or sand,

use the second gear. Accelerate
slowly to avoid spinning the drive
wheels.

䳜 Use sand, rock salt, or other non-

slip material under the drive
wheels to provide traction when
stalled in ice, snow, or mud.

Reducing the risk of a rollover

This multi-purpose passenger vehi-
cle is defined as a Sports Utility
Vehicle (SUV). Utility vehicles have a
significantly higher rollover rate
than other types of vehicles. SUV's
have higher ground clearance and a

narrower track to make them capa-
ble of performing in a wide variety
of offroad applications.

Specific design characteristics give
them a higher center of gravity than
ordinary vehicles. An advantage of
the higher ground clearance is a
better view of the road, which
allows you to anticipate problems.

They are not designed for cornering
at the same speeds as conventional
passenger vehicles, any more than
low-slung sports vehicles are
designed to perform satisfactorily in
off-road conditions. Due to this risk,
driver and passengers are strongly
recommended to buckle their seat
belts.

In a rollover crash, an unbelted per-
son is significantly more likely to die
than a person wearing a seat belt.
There are steps that a driver can
make to reduce the risk of a rollover.

If at all possible, avoid sharp turns
or abrupt maneuvers, do not load
your roof rack with heavy cargo,
and never modify your vehicle in any
way.
