REMOVAL

1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

2. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER (See REPLACEMENT )

3. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT (see COOLANT )

NOTE:

After the ignition switch is turned OFF, the navigation system
requires approximately 90 seconds to record various types of
memory and setting. As a result, after turning the ignition switch
OFF, wait 90 seconds or more before disconnecting the cable from
the negative (-) battery terminal.

Some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected
(see INITIALIZATION ).

4. REMOVE TIMING BELT

a. For the timing belt, refer to the following procedures (see REMOVAL ).

5. REMOVE WATER INLET HOUSING

a. Disconnect the water by-pass hose from the water inlet housing.

b. Remove the 2 bolts holding the water inlet housing to the water pump.

c. Disconnect the water inlet housing from the front water by-pass joint, and remove the water inlet

and inlet housing assembly.

d. Remove the O-ring from the water inlet housing.

6. REMOVE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY

a. Remove the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts, nut, water pump and gasket.

b. Remove the O-ring from the water by-pass pipe.

INSPECTION

1. INSPECT WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY

a. Visually check the air hole and water hole for coolant leakage.

If leakage is found, replace the water pump assembly and timing belt.

b. Turn the pulley and check that the water pump bearing moves smoothly and quietly.

If necessary, replace the water pump assembly.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALL WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY

a. Install a new O-ring to the water by-pass pipe end.

b. Apply soapy water to the O-ring.

c. Connect the water pump to the water by-pass pipe end.

d. Temporarily install the water pump and a new gasket with the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and nut.

Uniformly tighten the bolts, stud bolts and nut in several passes.

Torque: for Bolt 21 N*m (215 kgf*cm, 15 ft/lbf) for Stud bolt, nut 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13
ft.*lbf)

2. INSTALL WATER INLET HOUSING

a. Apply seal packing in a continuous line to the places shown in the illustration.

Seal packing: Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1215B or equivalent

Standard seal diameter: 2.0 to 3.0 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.)

b. Apply soapy water to a new O-ring and install it to the water inlet housing.

c. Temporarily install the water inlet housing with the 2 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several

steps.

Torque: 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf)

NOTE:

Remove any oil from the contact surface.

Install the water pump within 3 minutes after applying seal
packing.
