Evaporative Emissions - Evaporative
Emissions
S-MAX/Galaxy 2006.5 (02/2006-)
Description and Operation
Description
Evaporative emission canister
Evaporative emission canister purge valve
The evaporative emission system consists of an evaporative emission canister and an
evaporative emission canister purge valve. A combination of plastic lines and rubber hoses
connect the evaporative emission canister to the fuel tank and the evaporative emission
canister purge valve. The evaporative emission canister purge valve is also connected to
the intake manifold.
When the evaporative emission canister purge valve is closed, the fuel tank is vented into
the evaporative emission canister through the fuel tank vent valves and the fill limit vent
valve. The evaporative emission canister absorbs the fuel vapor and prevents the release of
hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. When the evaporative emission canister purge valve is
opened, the evaporative emission canister is exposed to the intake manifold vacuum and
the fuel vapor deposits are drawn into the manifold where they mix with the incoming
air/fuel charge.
The evaporative emission canister purge valve is controlled by the powertrain control
module (PCM) in relation to the driving characteristics of the vehicle.
