Diagnosis and Testing
Refer to Wiring Diagrams Section 417-01, for schematic and connector
information.
Special Tool(s)
Inspection and Testing
NOTE: The generic electronic module (GEM) is part of the central junction box (CJB).
NOTE: A new GEM needs to be configured after installation. For this purpose, the vehicle-
specific data are read out of the module to be changed using WDS and is transferred to
the new module. REFER to:
Module Configuration
(418-01 Module Configuration, General Procedures),
Generic Electronic Module (GEM)
(419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules, Diagnosis and
Testing).
NOTE: A new PCM needs to be configured after installation. For this purpose, the vehicle-
specific data are read out of the module to be changed using WDS and is transferred to
the new module.
REFER to:
Module Configuration
(418-01 Module Configuration, General Procedures).
NOTE: Before reading out the vehicle-specific data make sure that all electrical
connections in the vehicle are reconnected so that the module and WDS can communicate
correctly.
1. 1. Verify the customer concern.
2. 2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical (or mechanical) damage.
Visual Inspection Chart
3. 3. Resolve any obvious causes or concerns found during the visual inspection before
carrying out any further tests.
4. 4. If the cause of the concern cannot be found by visual inspection, continue with the
symptom chart.

PINPOINT TEST A : THE STOPLAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE
TEST CONDITIONS
DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS
A1: CHECK FUSE F28 (5 A) (SJB)
Ignition switch in position 0.
1
Disconnect Fuse F28 (5 A) (SJB).
2
CHECK Fuse F28 (5 A) (SJB).
3
Is the fuse OK.?
Yes
GO to A2
.
No
RENEW fuse F28 (5 A) (SJB) and CHECK the
operation of the system. If the fuse blows again,
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the
Wiring Diagrams. CHECK system operates correctly
A2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO FUSE F28 (5 A) (SJB) FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
Connect Fuse F28 (5 A) (SJB).
1
Ignition switch in position II.
2
Measure the voltage between fuse F28 (5 A) (SJB)
and ground.
3
Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
GO to A3
.
No
LOCATE AND RECTIFY the break in the voltage
supply to fuse F28 (5 A) (SJB) with the aid of the
Wiring Diagrams. CHECK system operates correctly
A3: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE STOPLAMP SWITCH FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
Ignition switch in position 0.
1
Disconnect Stoplamp switch from connector
C2CA29.
2
Ignition switch in position II.
3
Measure the voltage between the stoplamp switch,
connector C2CA29, pin 1, circuit SBP28A (GN/RD),
wiring harness side and ground.
4
Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
GO to A5
.
No
GO to A4
.
A4: RULE OUT THE SMART JUNCTION BOX AS A POSSIBLE CAUSE OF THE FAULT
Ignition switch in position 0.
1
Disconnect Smart Junction Box from connector
C1BP02B.
2
Measure the resistance between the stoplamp
switch, connector C2CA29, pin 1, circuit SBP28A
(GN/RD), wiring harness side and the Smart
Junction Box, connector C1BP02B, pin 66, circuit
SBP28A (GN/RD), wiring harness side.
3
Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohm registered?
Yes
INSTALL A NEW Smart Junction Box. CHECK system
operates correctly
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit
between the Smart Junction Box and the stoplamp
switch with the aid of the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK
system operates correctly
A5: RULE OUT THE STOPLAMP SWITCH AS THE CAUSE OF THE FAULT
Ignition switch in position 0.
1
Use a fused jumper lead (5 A) to connect the
stoplamp switch, connector C2CA29, between pin
2, circuit CCA29C (GN/BU) and pin 1, circuit
(GN/RD), wiring harness side.
2
Ignition switch in position II.
3
Check the stoplamps.
4
Do the stoplamps come on?
Yes
RENEW the stoplamp switch. CHECK system
operates correctly
No
GO to A6
.
A6: CHECK THE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE STOPLAMP SWITCH AND THE SMART
JUNCTION BOX FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
Ignition switch in position 0.
1
Disconnect Smart Junction Box from connector
C1BP02B.
2
Measure the resistance between the stoplamp
switch, connector C2CA29, pin 2, circuit CCA29C
(GN/BU), wiring harness side and the Smart
Junction Box, connector C1BP02B, pin 54, circuit
CCA29C (GN/BU), wiring harness side.
3
Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohm registered?
Yes
CHECK the Smart Junction Box and INSTALL A NEW
ONE if required. CHECK system operates correctly
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit
between the stoplamp switch and the Smart
Junction Box with the aid of the Wiring Diagrams.
CHECK system operates correctly
