DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

This article contains information that is specific to bi-fuel instrument cluster concerns. Refer to
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER-CONVENTIONAL - F150 for other instrument cluster information.

The bi-fuel cluster fuel gauge indication is controlled by the following components:

z

fuel pump module

z

liquid petroleum gas (LPG) sensor

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

It is very important to understand:

z

where the input (command) originates from.

z

all information (messages) necessary in order for a feature to operate.

z

which module(s) receive(s) the input or command message.

z

which module controls the output of the feature.

Instrument Cluster Replacement

Programming procedure. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER-CONVENTIONAL - F150 .

When instrument cluster replacement is necessary, contact the Instrument Cluster Program.

Fuel Gauge Indication

There are two bi-fuel options available, one for liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and one for compressed natural gas
(CNG). A single fuel gauge is used for both alternative fuel and gasoline level indication. When the alternative
(ALT) fuel switch is in the gasoline mode, the fuel pump module provides fuel level data to the instrument
cluster through hardwired circuitry. When the alternative (ALT) fuel switch is placed into the ALT fuel mode,
fuel gauge indication control switches from the fuel pump module to the alternative fuel control module
(AFCM). The AFCM uses input from the fuel tank pressure sensor to determine the level of CNG remaining in
the tank and transmits this data to the instrument cluster over the standard corporate protocol (SCP)
communication network. The instrument cluster, upon receipt of the SCP fuel level message, switches from
displaying the gasoline fuel level to displaying the CNG level.

On vehicles equipped with the CNG system, if a concern exists with the fuel tank pressure sensor or circuitry,

CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges if exposed to these

charges, damage may result.

NOTE:

Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER-CONVENTIONAL - F150 for instrument cluster
concerns that are not bi-fuel specific and not related to the fuel gauge.

NOTE:

Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER-CONVENTIONAL - F150 for instrument cluster
and generic electronic module/central timer module (GEM/CTM) diagnostic
trouble code (DTC) indices.

NOTE:

When installing a new instrument cluster, carry out the Parameter Reset and
Key
