Ford F150 Pickup. Instruction — part 404

Removal & Installation

1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels and brake drum.

2. Inspect the rear brake assembly for the following:

z

The rear wheel cylinder for excessive leakage that can contaminate brake system parts, and rebuild
as necessary.

z

The rear brake shoes and linings for contamination, and replace as necessary.

z

The rear brake shoes and linings for minimum thickness, above the backing plate or rivets, and
replace as necessary.

z

The springs for heat discoloration, and replace as necessary.

z

The adjusting lever contact with the brake adjuster screw.

3. Remove brake shoe retracting springs. See Fig. 11 .

4. Remove brake shoe adjusting lever cable from anchor pin, cable guide and adjusting lever.

5. Remove adjusting lever and adjusting lever return spring. Remove brake shoe adjusting screw spring.

6. Using Hold-Down Spring Remover/Installer (T73T-2300-A), remove brake shoe hold-down spring and

pin from each rear brake shoe and lining. Remove brake shoe adjuster assembly.

7. Remove primary brake shoe parking brake lever link and parking brake link spring. Remove parking

brake rear cable and conduit from parking brake lever. Remove rear brake shoe and lining. Remove
parking brake lever from secondary rear brake shoe.

8. Clean and lubricate backing plate and adjuster screw using Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric

Compound (D7AZ-19A331-A Motorcraft WA-10), or equivalent compound meeting Ford specification
ESE-M1C171-A. See Fig. 80 and Fig. 81 .

9. Bleed brakes as necessary. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM .

REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER & PADS

Removal & Installation

1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel.

2. Remove brake hose-to-caliper bolt. See Fig. 9 , Fig. 10 or Fig. 82 . Remove and plug hose.

3. Remove the brake caliper bolts. See Fig. 83 . Lift the rear disc brake caliper off the rear disc brake caliper

anchor plate. Check brake pad wear.

4. Inspect the rear disc brake caliper for leaks. If leaks are found, disassembly is required. See CALIPER

under OVERHAUL.

5. Place a large "C" clamp on caliper. Tighten clamp to bottom piston in cylinder bore. See Fig. 84 .

Remove clamp.

6. Remove and discard the slippers. See Fig. 85 .

7. To install, reverse removal procedure. Connect brake hose to caliper using NEW copper washers on

connector bolt. Bleed brakes. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM .

NOTE:

To prevent master cylinder overflow when caliper piston is depressed, remove
and discard some brake fluid from master cylinder.
