NATURAL GAS VEHICLE MODULE

Ground Circuits

Turn ignition off. Disconnect Natural Gas Vehicle Module (NGVM) 60-pin connector. See NGVM
LOCATION
table. Using DVOM, check continuity between chassis ground and NGVM connector terminals
No. 40 and 60. See Fig. 3. If continuity exists, see POWER CIRCUITS. If continuity does not exist, repair
open in affected ground circuit. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in
ELECTRICAL.

Power Circuits

Turn ignition off. Ensure NGVM 60-pin connector is disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for
battery voltage between chassis ground and NGVM connector terminals No. 1, 37 and 57 (VPWR). If battery
voltage is not present, repair open in affected circuit as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in
appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.

Engine Fuel Temperature Sensor

NOTE:

For gasoline-related sensor testing procedures such as; CHT, IAT, MAF
sensors, etc., see SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - GASOLINE article.

Faults in Engine Fuel Temperature (EFT) sensor or circuit should set a DTC. See QUICK TEST in SELF-
DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. If no DTC has been set, see TEST DB: ENGINE
FUEL TEMPERATURE SENSOR
under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL
& GASOLINE article for EFT sensor and circuit testing.

Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor

Faults in Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor or circuit should set a DTC. See QUICK TEST in SELF-
DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. If no DTC has been set, see TEST HB:
NATURAL GAS FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM
under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG,
FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article for FRP sensor and circuit testing.

Reference Voltage

Faults in sensor reference voltage or signal return circuits should set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). See
QUICK TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. If no DTC has been set,
see TEST C: REFERENCE VOLTAGE under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-
FUEL & GASOLINE article for FRT reference voltage and signal return circuit testing.

SWITCHES

Inertia Fuel Shutoff Switch

Ensure ignition is off. Locate Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch, behind right kick panel (Econoline and F150),
or on left side of trunk (Crown Victoria). Shake or jar IFS switch to cause switch to open. IFS switch reset
button should pop up. Fuel pump should not operate and vehicle should not start. Push down on reset button.
Restart engine. Fuel pump should operate.

Mini ISO Relay Test

NOTE:

Engine Fuel Temperature (EFT) sensor may also be known as Fuel Rail
Temperature (FRT) sensor.

NOTE:

Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor may also be known as Injection Control
Pressure (ICP) sensor.

NOTE:

For additional gasoline-related switch testing procedures such as; A/C high
pressure, BPP, O/D OFF switches, etc., see SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING -
GASOLINE article.

NOTE:

Fuel pump relay may also be referred to as the fuel valve relay.

2003 ENGINE PERFORMANCE System & Component Testing - CNG

1. Remove relay. Check relay continuity. Continuity should exist between relay terminals No. 85 and 86,

and between relay terminals No. 30 and 87a. See Fig. 4. Continuity should not exist between relay
terminals No. 30 and 87. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified,
replace relay.

2. Using a jumper wire, apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 85. Using a second jumper wire, ground

relay terminal No. 86. Continuity should now exist between relay terminals No. 30 and 87. If continuity is
not as specified, replace relay. If continuity is as specified, relay is okay at this time.

FUEL SYSTEM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

NOTE:

This test applies to PCM power relay, cooling fan low relay (if equipped), A/C
WOT cutout relay (if equipped) and fuel pump (valve) relay. For cooling fan high
relay testing and all cooling fan circuit testing, see TEST KF: FAN CONTROL
