Ford F150 Pickup. Instruction — part 383

for a more comfortable driving position. The APS consists of an adjustable pedal assembly, adjustable pedals
switch, adjustable pedals motor, brake pedal-to-accelerator pedal cable, Driver Seat Module (DSM), and
associated wiring. From the adjustable pedals switch, located on the instrument panel, the driver can adjust the
brake and accelerator pedals forward or rearward. See Fig. 3 . The adjustable pedals with memory feature are
operational with the ignition switch ON or OFF.

The adjustable pedals with memory feature are operational with the ignition switch ON or OFF. The pedals can
be adjusted forward or rearward using the adjustable pedal switch mounted on the left side of the instrument
panel.

The Driver Seat Module (DSM) controls the adjustable pedals. The DSM constantly monitors the systems under
its control and reports a concern in the form of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). A DTC can be retrieved with
the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) Tester or equivalent through the communications link.

The adjustable pedals with memory feature can be controlled by using the memory switches or the remote
keyless entry transmitter. The outside rearview mirror and power driver seat positions are also stored and
recalled with the power adjustable pedal positions. The system can store three memory settings. For
programming, testing and repair, see appropriate ADJUSTABLE PEDALS SYSTEMS article in MEMORY
MODULES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

Brake Booster

Both models are equipped with a dual-diaphragm vacuum booster. The power brake booster is a dual
diaphragm, vacuum assisted power brake booster. The booster reduces brake pedal pressure and travel distance.
The booster is located on the left side of the bulkhead in the engine compartment, between the brake pedal and
brake master cylinder. The booster is divided into separate chambers by the diaphragm and will not operate if
vacuum is restricted or if any of the vacuum related power brake components fail. The brake booster is replaced
as an assembly. If the power assist fails, the brake system will continue to operate with increased brake pedal
effort. See Fig. 4 .

The power brake booster check valve is located on the front of the power brake booster. The check valve is
positioned between the power brake booster and the power brake booster hose. It closes when the engine is
turned off. In the closed position, it traps engine vacuum in the power brake booster and retains vacuum to
provide several power assisted brake applications with the engine off.

Deactivator Switch

On models with speed control, a deactivator switch is located on the brake master cylinder as an additional
safety feature. See Fig. 5 . A Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch located on the brake pedal assembly, is
provided as an additional safety feature. Normally, on both models, when the brake pedal is depressed, the
speed control module deactivates the speed control system. Under increased brake pedal effort, the deactivator
switch, a normally closed switch, will open and remove power to the speed control servo clutch, releasing the
throttle independently of the speed control module.

Front Disc Brakes

Front disc brakes are standard on all models. A dual piston front caliper assembly is used on all models. On
2WD models, the disc brake caliper bolts to the front wheel spindles. The brake disc and hub is an integrally
cast assembly. See Fig. 6 or Fig. 7 . On 4WD models, the disc brake caliper bolts to the front wheel knuckle. A
separate brake disc attaches to the wheel hub. See Fig. 8 .

On all models, the disc brake caliper is a pin slider, dual piston type and has two caliper pistons. The caliper
housing has a fluid inlet at the center of the bore. A square section seal fitted into an annular groove in the
caliper cylinder bore seals against hydraulic pressure, while rubber boots seal the caliper pistons and caliper
bore from contamination.

The brake disc shield bolts to the front wheel spindle and protects the bearings and inboard surface of the brake
disc. The pads are contained within the front disc brake caliper anchor plate and are held to the front disc brake
caliper anchor plate abutments by disc brake anti-rattle clips.
