Ford F150 Pickup. Instruction — part 60

The safety belt switch is hardwired to the generic electronic module (GEM) or central timer module (CTM).
The safety belt warning indicator will be illuminated when the GEM/CTM sends a ground signal to the
instrument cluster. The safety belt indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START
position and then in the RUN position.

Yellow Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Warning Indicator

The ABS indicator will be illuminated when the anti-lock brake control module sends an open signal to the
instrument cluster. The prove out of the ABS indicator is controlled by the anti-lock brake control module.

Service Engine Soon Indicator

After the engine is started, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator will prove out for a duration of three
seconds. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within five seconds, the instrument
cluster will send two messages to the PCM and attempt to reestablish communication. If the instrument cluster
is unable to establish communication, the instrument cluster will illuminate the SERVICE ENGINE SOON
indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

High Beam Indicator

The high beam indicator will illuminate when the multifunction switch is in the high beam position and sends a
battery signal to the instrument cluster.

Right and Left Turn Indicator

The right and left turn indicators will illuminate when the multifunction switch is in either turn signal position
or hazard lamps position and sends a battery signal to the instrument cluster.

Air Bag Indicator

The air bag indicator will be illuminated when the restraint control module (RCM) sends a ground signal to the
instrument cluster. The prove-out of the air bag indicator is controlled by the RCM.

Anti-Theft Indicator

The THEFT indicator provides passive anti-theft system (PATS) prove out. The THEFT indicator will prove-
out for three seconds following the ignition switch cycle and will flash following the ignition OFF to indicate
that PATS is active.

Charging System Indicator

The charging system indicator will be illuminated when the generator sends a ground signal to the instrument
cluster.

Speed Control

The speed control (CRUISE) indicator is controlled by the speed control servo and hardwired to the instrument
cluster.

4X4 High Indicator

The 4X4 high indicator will be illuminated when the vehicle is in 4X4 high mode and the GEM sends a ground
signal to the instrument cluster. The 4X4 high indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the
START position and then in the RUN position.

Low Range Indicator

The LOW RANGE indicator will be illuminated when the vehicle is in 4X4 low and the PCM sends a message
to the instrument cluster via the SCP network. The low range indicator will prove out when the ignition switch
is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position.

Door Ajar Indicator

The door ajar indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the
RUN position. The door ajar indicator will be illuminated when the GEM/CTM provides a ground signal to the
instrument cluster.

Low Fuel Indicator

The low fuel indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the
RUN position. The low fuel indicator will illuminate when the fuel level gets low. The instrument cluster
receives the fuel level information directly from the fuel sender.

Check Fuel Cap

The PCM monitors pressure in the fuel evaporative system. When the PCM detects a massive or critical loss of
pressure in the fuel evaporative system due to a loose fuel cap or damaged fuel evaporative system, the PCM
will set a DTC and provide a ground to the instrument cluster to illuminate the check fuel cap indicator. Once
the fuel cap has been resecured, or the source of the leak has been corrected, the ignition must be cycled to reset
the PCM and extinguish the check fuel cap indicator.

Inspection and Verification

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before

proceeding to the next step.

4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC)

located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If
the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:

z

check that the program card is correctly installed.

z

check the connections to the vehicle.

z

check the ignition switch position.

5. If the diagnostic tool still does not power up, refer to the diagnostic tool instruction.

6. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:

z

CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to MODULE
COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
.

z

NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for instrument cluster, GO to Pinpoint Test A.

z

NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for generic electronic module/central timer module (GEM/CTM), refer to
MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .

z

SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the
continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster, and GEM/CTM.

7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic Trouble Code

2003 Ford Pickup F150

(DTC) Index, or the GEM/CTM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.

8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode to

continue diagnostics.

Parameter Reset and Key Programming

To reset the instrument cluster parameters and program the keys, complete the following procedure:

1. Connect the diagnostic tool.

2. Select the instrument cluster.

3. Select ENTER SECURITY ACCESS. Wait 10 minutes for security access to be granted.

4. Select PARAMETER RESET.

5. Disconnect the diagnostic tool.

6. Place the first PATS key in the OFF position.

7. Place the key in the ON position.

8. Remove the key.

9. Place the second PATS key in the ON position.

10. Place the key in the OFF position (the programming sequence is complete).

Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode

To enter the Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode, depress and hold the instrument cluster SELECT/RESET
button and then turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Continue pressing the SELECT/RESET button
(five seconds) until tESt is displayed in the odometer. The SELECT/RESET button must be released within
three seconds of the odometer displaying tESt to begin the dealer test mode. Depress the SELECT/RESET
button to advance through the following steps until dtc is displayed. Depressing the SELECT/RESET button
will display any continuous DTCs stored before proceeding to the next step.

NOTE:

The instrument cluster parameters must be reset upon installation of a new
instrument cluster.

NOTE:

Both passive anti-theft system (PATS) keys are needed to carry out this
procedure.

NOTE:

If the vehicle fails to start following completion of the parameter reset and
key programming sequence, clear the keep alive memory (KAM) by
disconnecting the battery for five minutes.
