CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
Removal & Installation (4.6L & 5.4L)
Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located at front of left cylinder head. See Fig. 54 . Disconnect negative
battery cable. Disconnect CMP sensor connector. See Fig. 58 . Remove CMP sensor mounting bolt. Remove
CMP sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten CMP sensor mounting bolts to specification. See

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR & SYNCHRONIZER
Removal (4.2L)
1. Disconnect negative battery cable(s). Position crankshaft so piston No. 1 is at TDC of compression
stroke. Partially drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect EGR vacuum hose from
EGR valve. Remove EGR valve adapter bolts and nut (1). Remove EGR valve and adapter (2). See Fig.
59 . Disconnect heater outlet tube, and position aside.
CAUTION: Synchro Positioner (T96T-12200-A) is required to properly install
synchronizer. See Fig. 60 . Failure to use synchro positioner during
installation will cause fuel injection to be out of time and may cause
engine damage.
NOTE:
Numbers in parenthesis refer to numbers in illustration.
CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft during removal and installation
procedure or fuel system timing will be out of time. Possible engine
damage may occur.

2. Disconnect Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor harness connector. See Fig. 60 . Mark orientation of CMP
position sensor electrical connector. Remove CMP sensor. Remove CMP synchronizer retaining bolt.
Remove CMP synchronizer.

Installation
1. Ensure crankshaft is still at TDC No. 1 compression stroke. Install synchro positioner on CMP
synchronizer by rotating synchro positioner until it engages notch in CMP synchronizer housing.
NOTE:
Oil pump driveshaft might come out with CMP synchronizer. If so, retrieve oil
pump driveshaft before proceeding.
CAUTION: Synchro Positioner (T96T-12200-A) must be used during installation of
CMP synchronizer assembly. Failure to do so will result in fuel injector to
be out of time, and possible engine damage may occur.
NOTE:
During installation, arrow on synchro positioner will rotate clockwise as

2. Install CMP synchronizer so arrow on synchro positioner is 54 degrees from centerline of engine. See
Fig. 60 . Install CMP synchronizer retaining bolt.
3. Remove synchro positioner. Install CMP sensor. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bleed cooling system.
