Ford F150 Pickup. Instruction — part 1351
2003 ENGINE PERFORMANCE
System & Component Testing - Gasoline
INTRODUCTION
Before testing separate components or systems, perform QUICK TEST procedures in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS -
CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article. If no DTCs are present or only pass codes are found during self-
diagnostics and symptom is present, proceed to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CNG, FLEX-
FUEL & GASOLINE article for diagnosis by symptom. If sent here from TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO
CODES article, proceed with diagnosis in this article.
In many cases a circuit that is open, or shorted to ground or power can be at fault. Component replacement is
only suggested after testing and passing circuits and control devices. A component test may direct you to a
system test in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article to help avoid replacement of
a good component. If the component can be tested properly on its own, it will be included here.

NOTE:
References to Econoline include Cutaway and RV Cutaway. References to F250-
550 Super Duty Pickup include Cab & Chassis.
NOTE:
Testing individual components does not isolate shorted or open circuits.
Perform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum
10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use
ohmmeter to isolate shorted or open wiring harness. For identification of
circuits and terminals referenced in test procedures, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

Ground Circuits
1. Turn ignition off. Locate Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See POWERTRAIN CONTROL
MODULE LOCATION table. Using a DVOM, check continuity between ground and PCM connector
terminals. See IDENTIFYING PCM GROUND TERMINALS table. See Fig. 1 -Fig. 4 . If continuity
does not exist, repair open ground circuit as necessary. If continuity exists, go to next step.

2. Touch DVOM negative lead to a good ground. With vehicle running, use DVOM positive lead to
backprobe each ground terminal. DVOM should indicate less than one volt. If reading is more than one
volt, check for open, corrosion or loose connection on ground circuit.
Power Circuits
Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for battery voltage between ground and B+ circuit at PCM terminal
No. 55 (104-pin PCM), terminal No. B40 (122-pin PCM), terminal No. B45 (150-pin PCM - Focus 2.3L), or
terminal No. A44 or B44 (150-pin PCM - all others). See Fig. 1 -Fig. 4 . Turn ignition switch to START or
RUN position. Check for battery voltage between ground and specified VPWR circuit at PCM harness
connector. See PCM VPWR CIRCUIT TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. If battery voltage is not
present, check for an open in VPWR circuit between PCM and PCM power relay. For additional testing
procedures, see TEST B: EEC-V POWER RELAY under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS -
CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article.
