The pyrotechnic belt tensioners on the driver’s side
and front passenger’s side are integrated into the
retractor mechanism.
The following instructions must be followed when
removing, installing or replacing the safety belt
tensioner:
• Note the position and routing of the safety belt
buckle pretensioner wiring harnesses to aid
installation. An incorrectly routed wiring harness
may lead to the wiring harness becoming
damaged on the seat mechanism.
Restraints control module (RCM)
E98729
The RCM is located underneath the floor console
near the gearshift lever.
The following instructions must be followed when
removing, installing or replacing the RCM:
• After an accident, the RCM can only be used
again if it is not physically damaged and if it
passes a self-test without any faults. For further
information refer to TECHNICAL SERVICE
BULLETIN 35/2006.
• A new RCM must be programmed using the
diagnostic unit.
Front crash sensor
E105794
The impact sensor is installed at the front of the
vehicle next to the hood lock.
The following instructions must be followed when
removing, installing or replacing the front crash
sensor:
• Continued use of the impact sensor is
permissible provided it has not been physically
damaged and it passes a self-test.
• Make sure that the front crash sensor is installed
in the correct position.

System Operation
General
The RCM performs a self-diagnosis when the
ignition is switched on.
All components of the restraints control system are
checked. If an error is found, the airbag control
lamp is activated for 8 seconds after the ignition is
switched on. The first 8 seconds of the ignition
cycle always follow the same pattern: first 3.2
seconds on, then 4.8 seconds off. Only after 8
seconds can the airbag control lamp be used as a
fault indicator.
After an airbag has been deployed, a new RCM
must be installed. If the RCM is changed, the
module must be configured with IDS.

Component Description
Front crash sensor
E99051
Data from the crash sensor are evaluated by the
RCM to assess the severity of a frontal impact. The
crash sensor transmits digitally encoded
acceleration information to the RCM.
The RCM will store a trouble code (DTC) if one of
the crash sensors fails.
Driver and passenger front air bag system.
E98735
The driver and passenger air bags are single-stage
air bags.

The belt tensioner is built into the belt retractor and
installed on the driver and passenger sides. On
the outside of the seat belt retractor there is a metal
tube, at the upper end of which is located a
pyrotechnic ignition unit. It is connected with the
metal tube via a joining connector.

Inspection and Verification
1. Verify the customer concern.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical
or electrical damage.

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported
concern is found, correct the cause (if possible)
before proceeding to the next step.
4. If the cause is not visually evident, verify the
symptom and refer to the diagnostic tab within
the Ford diagnostic equipment.
Air Bag Warning Indicator
The air bag warning indicator is incorporated into
the instrument cluster, together with the automatic
detach detect circuit. The air bag warning indicator
illuminates for 3.2 seconds at key ON and goes
OFF for 4.8 seconds. If the system self-tests OK
the indicator will stay OFF, but if there is a fault
condition, the air bag warning indicator will come
ON again and stay illuminated.
The system is designed to illuminate the air bag
warning indicator continuously if the RCM circuit
is broken, either by loss of power, ground supply,
module disconnect or CAN BUS failure.
Diagnostic evaluation of the SRS should be made
through the DLC using the Ford diagnostic
equipment to establish the nature of the concern.
