Ford Edge (2018 year). Manual — part 54

The sensor on the left-hand side is only
partially obstructed and zone coverage on

the right-hand side is maximized.

E142441

Zone coverage also decreases when
parking at narrow angles. The sensor on
the left-hand side is mostly obstructed and
zone coverage on that side is severely
reduced.

System Lights, Messages and
Audible Alerts

E142442

When the system detects a vehicle, an
indicator illuminates in the exterior mirror
on the side the approaching vehicle is
coming from. A tone sounds and a
message appears in the information
display.

Note: In exceptional conditions, the system
could alert you even when there is nothing
in the detection zone, for example a vehicle
passing in the distance.

Blocked Sensors

E205199

The sensors are behind the rear bumper
on both sides of your vehicle.

Note: Keep the sensors free from snow, ice
and large accumulations of dirt.

Note: Do not cover the sensors with bumper
stickers, repair compound or other objects.

Note: Blocked sensors could affect system
performance.

If the sensors are blocked, a message may
appear in the information display when
you shift into reverse (R). See General
Information (page 102).

System Limitations

The system may not correctly operate
when any of the following occur:

The sensors are blocked.

Adjacently parked vehicles or objects
are obstructing the sensors.

Vehicles approach at speeds greater
than 37 mph (60 km/h).

The vehicle speed is greater than 7 mph
(12 km/h).

You reverse out of an angled parking
space.

System Errors

If the system detects a fault a message
displays. See Information Messages
(page 111).

Switching the System Off and On

You can temporarily switch the system off
using the information display. See
Information Messages (page 111). W
hen
you switch system off, a message displays.
See General Information (page 102).

Note: The system turns on each time you
switch the ignition on and you shift into
reverse (R). If you temporarily switch the
system off, it turns on the next time you
switch the ignition on.

Note: The system may not correctly operate
when towing a trailer. For vehicles with a
trailer tow module and tow bar approved
by us, the system turns off when you attach
a trailer. For vehicles with an aftermarket
trailer tow module or tow bar, we
recommend that you switch the system off
when you attach a trailer.

To permanently switch the system off,
contact an authorized dealer.

STEERING

Electric Power Steering

WARNING

If the system detects an error, you
may not feel a difference in the
steering, however a serious condition

may exist. Have your vehicle checked as
soon as possible, failure to do so may
result in loss of steering control.

Note: The electric power steering system
has diagnostic checks that continuously
monitor the system. If a fault is detected a
message displays in the information display.
Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do
so and switch the ignition off. After waiting
at least 10 seconds, switch the ignition on
and watch the information display for a
steering system warning message. If a
steering system warning message returns,
have the system checked as soon as
possible.

Your vehicle has an electric power steering
system. There is no fluid reservoir. No
maintenance is required.

If your vehicle loses electrical power while
you are driving, electric power steering
assistance is lost. The steering system still
operates and you can steer your vehicle
manually. Manually steering your vehicle
requires more effort.

Extreme continuous steering may increase
the effort required for you to steer your
vehicle. This increased effort prevents
overheating and permanent damage to
the steering system. You do not lose the
ability to steer your vehicle manually.
Typical steering and driving maneuvers
allow the system to cool and return to
normal operation.

Steering Tips

If the steering wanders or pulls, check for:

Correct tire pressures.

Uneven tire wear.

Loose or worn suspension
components.

Loose or worn steering components.

Improper vehicle alignment.

Note: A high crown in the road or high
crosswinds may also make the steering
seem to wander or pull.

Adaptive Learning

The electronic power steering system
adaptive learning helps correct road
irregularities and improves overall handling
and steering feel. It communicates with
the brake system to help operate
advanced stability control and accident
avoidance systems. Additionally, whenever
the battery is disconnected or a new
battery installed, you must drive your
vehicle a short distance before the system
relearns the strategy and reactivates all
systems.

Adaptive Steering

(If Equipped)

Note: The adaptive steering system has
diagnostic checks that continuously monitor
the system. If a fault is detected a message
displays in the information display. If a red
warning message displays, stop your vehicle
as soon as it is safe to do so. The message
may clear if the fault is no longer present. If
an adaptive steering system warning
message appears each time you start your
vehicle, have the system checked as soon
as possible.

The adaptive steering system continually
changes the steering ratio with changes to
vehicle speed, optimizing the steering
response in all conditions.

The adaptive steering system is designed
with a locking device. While the lock is
engaged, your vehicle returns to a fixed
steering ratio. You may also notice a sound
when you start or turn off your vehicle as
the lock is disengaged or engaged. If your
vehicle loses electrical power or detects a
fault while you are driving, the lock engages
and you are able to continue steering.
During this time it is possible that the
steering wheel may not be straight when
the vehicle is driving straight ahead. During
this time you may notice that the steering
wheel angle required to steer the vehicle
may be different. Extreme operating
conditions may also cause the lock to
engage. This strategy prevents overheating
and permanent damage to the adaptive
steering system. Typical steering and
driving maneuvers allow the system to cool
and return to normal operation.

PRE-COLLISION ASSIST

WARNINGS

This system is an extra driving aid. It
does not replace your attention and
judgment, or the need to apply the

brakes. This system does NOT
automatically brake your vehicle. If you fail
to press the brake pedal when necessary,
you may collide with another vehicle.

The Pre-Collision Assist system with
brake support cannot help prevent
all collisions. Do not rely on this

system to replace your judgment and the
need to maintain correct distance and
speed.

Note: The system does not detect, warn or
respond to potential collisions with vehicles
to the rear or sides of your vehicle.

Note: The Pre-Collision Assist system is
active at speeds above approximately
5 mph (8 km/h).

E156130

The system alerts you of certain collision
risks. The system's sensor detects your
vehicle's rapid approach to other vehicles
traveling in the same direction as your
vehicle.

E156131

When your vehicle rapidly approaches
another vehicle, a red warning light flashes
and a tone sounds.

The brake support system assists you in
reducing any collision speed by
pre-charging the brakes. If the risk of
collision continues to increases after the
audio-visual warning, the brake support
prepares the brake system for rapid
braking. The system does not
automatically activate the brakes, but if
the brake pedal is pressed even lightly, the
brakes apply full stopping power.

Using the Pre-Collision Assist
System

WARNING

The Pre-Collision Assist system’s
brake support reduces collision
speed only if you brake your vehicle

before any collision. As in any typical
braking situation, you must press your
brake pedal.

You can adjust the warning system's
sensitivity through your information
display. See General Information (page
102).

Note: When possible, the manufacturer
recommends using the highest sensitivity
setting. If warnings are too frequent, you can
reduce your system's sensitivity. Reduced
sensitivity causes fewer and later system
warnings. See General Information (page
102).
