ABS FAQ

1. What is ABS?

ABS is an acronym for “Anti-lock Brake System”, which serves to ensure optimal

braking distance and excellent brake stability and steerability on all kinds of road

surfaces.

2. What does ABS do for me?

ABS offers an important safety advantage by preventing the wheels from locking

during emergency braking situations which will cause loss in steering control of front

wheel and offtracking or side skidding of rear wheel, allowing drivers to maintain

control over steering and operate vehicles more effectively to steer around obstacles.

3. How do I know if the vehicle I’m driving has ABS?

Two methods recommended: 1. check your dashboard for a shortly lighted ABS

warning light; or 2. simply ask your dealer.

4. How does ABS work?

The electronic control unit in ABS modulates brake pressure at all four wheels

through an electromagnetic valve according to signals sent by wheel speed sensors

and some certain control logics, just like the way an experienced driver pumps brake

pedal, the difference is that a computer reacts much quicker than human brains, and

the effect is also much better.

5. How do I know my ABS is working?

You will hear a mechanical sound and feel some pulsation in brake pedal when ABS

is working. It is important not to take your foot off the brake pedal when you hear

noise or feel vibrations, but instead continue to apply firm pressure.

6. Do cars with ABS stop more quickly than cars without it?

Under most conditions the answer is yes, especially on snow-covered or wet road

surfaces. However, don’t forget to steer around any obstacles you see on the roads.

7. What if ABS fails?

ABS warning light goes on once ABS fails. In this case ABS is deactivated, while

conventional brake system remains undamaged, which means you still can brake

following normal procedure.

8. When does ABS warning light go on?

ABS warning light goes on for about 1.7 seconds after starting vehicle, and then goes

out. After that, the light will go on only when ABS failure occurs. Therefore, you are

supposed to go to service station once the light goes on again, and any DIY repair of

ABS is not recommended.

“Four Dos” and “Four Don’ts” of ABS

“Four Dos”

Do keep your foot on the brake pedal. Maintain firm and continuous pressure on the

brake while steering to enable four-wheel ABS to work properly.

Do allow enough distance to stop. Allow three seconds or more braking time when

driving under good conditions after vehicles. Allow more time if conditions are

hazardous.

Do practice driving with ABS. Become accustomed to pulsations that occur in the

brake pedal when ABS is activated. Empty parking lots or other open areas are

excellent places to practice emergency stops.

Do consult the Driver’s Manual for additional driving instructions on the anti-lock

brake system.

Four “Don’ts”

Don’t drive an ABS-equipped vehicle more aggressively than vehicles without ABS.

Driving around curves faster, changing lanes abruptly or performing other aggressive

steering maneuvers is neither appropriate nor safe with any vehicle.

Don’t pump the brakes. In ABS-equipped vehicles, pumping the brake turns the

system on and off, which might result in weakening braking performance and increase

of braking distance. ABS pumps the brakes for you automatically at a much faster rate,

and allows better steering control.

Don’t forget to steer. ABS enables drivers to steer in emergency braking situations,

but the system itself does not steer.

Don’t be alarmed by mechanical noises and/or slight pedal pulsations while applying

the brake in an ABS-equipped vehicle. These conditions are normal and let the driver

know ABS is working.
