DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
DEFENDER 1999 MY
4.1
ANTI-THEFT ALARM
DESCRIPTION
Although a key is used in the normal way to lock and unlock the vehicle, this
will not arm the alarm system. The system is armed with an RF handset, which
transmits a rolling code. This code is received by the alarm ECU, which is
mounted behind the instrument pack.
The alarm system fitted to 1999 MY Defenders has two methods of protecting
the vehicle; perimetric protection, and volumetric protection.
Perimetric protection monitors the hinged panels of the vehicle; the bonnet, the
tail door, the drivers door, and all passenger doors. If any of these panels are
opened without the alarm ECU receiving the correct signal from the RF
handset, the alarm will be triggered.
Volumetric protection monitors the interior space within the passenger
compartment. When the alarm is armed, the volumetric sensor (mounted in the
headlining above the RH ’B’ post) will sense any movement and trigger the
alarm.
The alarm ECU also interacts with the Engine Control Module (ECM), causing
the engine to be immobilised whenever the alarm is armed.
See Engine
Immobilisation.
