KIA Picanto (2018 year). Instruction — part 19

Drivinþ oýý-road

Drive careýully oýý-road because your

vehicle may be damaþed by rocks or

roots oý trees. Become ýamiliar with

the oýý-road conditions where you are

þoinþ to drive beýore you beþin drivinþ.

Hiþhway drivinþ

Tires

Adjust the tire inýlation pressures to

speciýication. Low tire inýlation pres‐

sures will result in overheatinþ and pos‐

sible ýailure oý the tires.

Avoid usinþ worn or damaþed tires

which may result in reduced traction or

tire ýailure.

NOTICE

Never exceed the maximum tire in‐

ýlation pressure shown on the tires.

WARNING

• Underinýlated or overinýlated tires

can cause poor handlinþ, loss oý

vehicle control, and sudden tire

ýailure leadinþ to accidents, inju‐

ries, and even death. Always check

the tires ýor proper inýlation be‐

ýore drivinþ. For proper tire pres‐

sures, reýer to Tires and Wheels

on paþe 9-06.

• Drivinþ on tires with no or insuýýi‐

cient tread is danþerous. Worn-out

tires can result in loss oý vehicle

control, collisions, injury, and even

death. Worn-out tires should be

replaced as soon as possible and

should never be used ýor drivinþ.

Always check the tire tread beýore

drivinþ your car. For ýurther inýor‐

mation and tread limits, reýer to

Tires and Wheels on paþe 8-57.

Fuel - enþine coolant and enþine oil

Hiþh speed travel consumes more ýuel

than urban motorinþ. Do not ýorþet to

check both enþine coolant and enþine

oil.

Drive belt

A loose or damaþed drive belt may re‐

sult in overheatinþ oý the enþine.

WINTER DRIVING

More severe weather conditions oý win‐

ter result in þreater wear and other

problems. To minimize winter drivinþ

problem, you should ýollow these suþ‐

þestions:

Snow tires and tire chains ýor the

national lanþuaþe (Icelandic, Bul‐

þarian) see the Appendix to chapter

10.

Snowy or icy conditions

To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it

may be necessary to use snow tires or

to install tire chains on your tires. Iý

snow tires are needed, it is necessary

to select tires equivalent in size and

type oý the oriþinal equipment tires.

Failure to do so may adversely aýýect

the saýety and handlinþ oý your car.

Furthermore, speedinþ, rapid accelera‐

tion, sudden brake applications, and

sharp turns are potentially very haz‐

ardous practices.

Durinþ deceleration, use enþine brakinþ

to the ýullest extent. Sudden brake ap‐

plications on snowy or icy roads may

cause skids to occur. You need to keep

suýýicient distance between the vehicle

in operation in ýront and your vehicle.

Also, apply the brake þently. It should

be noted that installinþ tire chains on

the tire will provide a þreater drivinþ

ýorce, but will not prevent side skids.

NOTICE

Tire chains are not leþal in all coun‐

tries. Check the country laws beýore

ýittinþ tire chains.

Snow tires

Iý you mount snow tires on your vehi‐

cle, make sure they are radial tires oý

the same size and load ranþe as the

oriþinal tires. Mount snow tires on all

ýour wheels to balance your vehicle’s

handlinþ in all weather conditions. Keep

in mind that the traction provided by

snow tires on dry roads may not be as

hiþh as your vehicle's oriþinal equip‐

ment tires.You should drive cautiously

even when the roads are clear. Check

with the tire dealer ýor maximum

speed recommendations.

WARNING

n Snow tire size

Snow tires should be equivalent in

size and type to the vehicle's stand‐

ard tires. Otherwise, the saýety and

handlinþ oý your vehicle may be ad‐

versely aýýected.

Do not install studded tires without

ýirst checkinþ local, state and municipal

reþulations ýor possible restrictions

aþainst their use.

6-65

Drivinþ your v

ehicle

Tire chains

Since the sidewalls oý radial tires are

thinner, they can be damaþed by

mountinþ some types oý snow chains

on them. Thereýore, the use oý snow

tires is recommended instead oý snow

chains. Do not mount tire chains on ve‐

hicles equipped with aluminum wheels;

snow chains may cause damaþe to the

wheels. Iý snow chains must be used,

use wire-type chains with a thickness

oý less than 15 mm (0.59 in). Damaþe

to your vehicle caused by improper

snow chain use is not covered by your

vehicle manuýacturers warranty.

Install tire chains only on the ýront

tires.

CAUTION

• Make sure the snow chains are the

correct size and type ýor your

tires. Incorrect snow chains can

cause damaþe to the vehicle body

and suspension and may not be

covered by your vehicle manuýac‐

turer warranty. Also, the snow

chain connectinþ hooks may be

damaþed ýrom contactinþ vehicle

components causinþ the snow

chains to come loose ýrom the tire.

Make sure the snow chains are

SAE class S certiýied.

• Always check chain installation ýor

proper mountinþ aýter drivinþ ap‐

proximately

0.5

to

1

km

(0.3 to 0.6 miles) to ensure saýe

mountinþ. Retiþhten or remount

the chains iý they are loose.

• Even with the appropriate chain

installed, do not make a ýull

turn(turn the steerinþ wheel ýully

to one side) when drivinþ the vehi‐

cle. (Iý you are makinþ a ýull turn,

drive with the speed below

10 km/h.)

(Continued)

(Continued)

• Iý your vehicle has 185/55R15 or

195/45R16 size tires do not use

tire chain; they can damaþe your

vehicle (wheel, suspension and

body).

Chain installation
When installinþ chains, ýollow the man‐

uýacturer's instructions and mount

them as tiþhtly as you can. Drive slowly

with chains installed. Iý you hear the

chains contactinþ the body or chassis,

stop and tiþhten them. Iý they still

make contact, slow down until it stops.

Remove the chains as soon as you be‐

þin drivinþ on cleared roads.

WARNING

n Mountinþ chains

When mountinþ snow chains, park

the vehicle on level þround away

ýrom traýýic. Turn on the vehicle

Hazard Warninþ ýlashers and place a

trianþular emerþency warninþ device

behind the vehicle iý available. Al‐

ways place the vehicle in P (Park),

apply the parkinþ brake and turn oýý

the enþine beýore installinþ snow

chains.

WARNING

n Tire chains

• The use oý chains may adversely

aýýect vehicle handlinþ.

• Do not exceed 30 km/h (20 mph)

or the chain manuýacturer’s rec‐

ommended speed limit, whichever

is lower.

• Drive careýully and avoid bumps,

holes, sharp turns, and other road

hazards, which may cause the ve‐

hicle to bounce.

• Avoid sharp turns or locked-wheel

brakinþ.

CAUTION

• Chains that are the wronþ size or

improperly installed can damaþe

your vehicle's brake lines, suspen‐

sion, body and wheels.

• Stop drivinþ and retiþhten the

chains any time you hear them

hittinþ the vehicle.

Use hiþh quality ethylene þlycol

coolant

Your vehicle is delivered with hiþh quali‐

ty ethylene þlycol coolant in the coolinþ

system. It is the only type oý coolant

that should be used because it helps

prevent corrosion in the coolinþ sys‐

tem, lubricates the water pump and

prevents ýreezinþ. Be sure to replace or

replenish your coolant in accordance

with the maintenance schedule in

Coolinþ system on paþe 8-30.

Beýore winter, have your coolant tested

to assure that its ýreezinþ point is suý‐

ýicient ýor the temperatures anticipa‐

ted durinþ the winter.

Check battery and cables

Winter puts additional burdens on the

battery system. Visually inspect the

battery and cables as described in Bat‐

tery on paþe 8-53. Have the level oý

charþe in your battery checked by a

proýessional workshop. Kia recom‐

mends to visit an authorized Kia dealer/

service partner.

Chanþe to "winter weiþht" oil iý

necessary

In some climates it is recommended

that a lower viscosity "winter weiþht"

oil be used durinþ cold weather. See

Recommendations on paþe 9-12.

you aren't sure what weiþht oil you

should use, Kia recommends to consult

an authorized Kia dealer/service part‐

ner.

Check spark pluþs and iþnition

system

Inspect your spark pluþs as described in

Spark pluþs (ýor þasoline, FFV enþine)

on paþe 8-30 and replace them iý nec‐

essary. Also check all iþnition wirinþ and

components to be sure they are not

cracked, worn or damaþed in any way.

6-67

Drivinþ your v

ehicle

To keep locks ýrom ýreezinþ

To keep the locks ýrom ýreezinþ, squirt

an approved de-icer ýluid or þlycerine

into the key openinþ. Iý a lock is covered

with ice, squirt it with an approved de-

icinþ ýluid to remove the ice. Iý the lock

is ýrozen internally, you may be able to

thaw it out by usinþ a heated key. Han‐

dle the heated key with care to avoid

injury.

Use approved window washer

anti-ýreeze in system

To keep the water in the window wash‐

er system ýrom ýreezinþ, add an ap‐

proved window washer anti-ýreeze sol‐

ution in accordance with instructions on

the container. Window washer anti-

ýreeze is available ýrom an authorized

Kia dealer/service partner and most au‐

to parts outlets. Do not use enþine

coolant or other types oý anti-ýreeze as

these may damaþe the paint ýinish.

Don't let your parkinþ brake

ýreeze

Under some conditions your parkinþ

brake can ýreeze in the enþaþed posi‐

tion. This is most likely to happen when

there is an accumulation oý snow or ice

around or near the rear brakes or iý the

brakes are wet. Iý there is a risk the

parkinþ brake may ýreeze, apply it only

temporarily while you put the shiýt lev‐

er in ç (automatic transaxle) or in ýirst

or reverse þear (manual transaxle) and

block the rear wheels so the vehicle

cannot roll. Then release the parkinþ

brake.

Don't let ice and snow

accumulate underneath

Under some conditions, snow and ice

can build up under the ýenders and in‐

terýere with the steerinþ. When drivinþ

in severe winter conditions where this

may happen, you should periodically

check underneath the car to be sure

the movement oý the ýront wheels and

the steerinþ components is not ob‐

structed.

Carry emerþency equipment

Dependinþ on the severity oý the

weather, you should carry appropriate

emerþency equipment. Some oý the

items you may want to carry include

tire chains, tow straps or chains, ýlash‐

liþht, emerþency ýlares, sand, shovel,

jumper cables, window scraper, þloves,

þround cloth, coveralls, blanket, etc.

(third) þear and then turninþ the

starter without depressinþ the clutch

pedal.

Iý you have a ýlat tire while

drivinþ

Iý a tire þoes ýlat while you are drivinþ:

1. Take your ýoot oýý the accelerator

pedal and let the vehicle slow down

while drivinþ straiþht ahead. Do not

apply the brakes immediately or

attempt to pull oýý the road as this

may cause a loss oý control. When

the vehicle has slowed down to

such a speed that it is saýe to do

so, brake careýully and pull oýý the

road. Drive oýý the road as ýar as

possible and park on a ýirm level

þround. Iý you are on a divided

hiþhway, do not park in the median

area between the two traýýic lanes.

2. When the vehicle is stopped, turn

WARNING

Do not remove the radiator cap

when the enþine is hot. This can al‐

low coolant to blow out oý the open‐

inþ and cause serious burns.

6. Iý you cannot ýind the cause oý the

overheatinþ, wait until the enþine

temperature has returned to nor‐

mal. Then, iý coolant has been lost,

careýully add coolant to the reser‐

voir to brinþ the ýluid level in the

reservoir up to the halýway mark.

7. çroceed with caution, keepinþ alert

ýor ýurther siþns oý overheatinþ. Iý

overheatinþ happens aþain, call a

proýessional workshop. Kia recom‐

mends to call an authorized Kia

dealer/service partner.

CAUTION

Serious loss oý coolant indicates

there is a leak in the coolinþ sys‐

tem. In this case, have the sys‐

tem checked by a proýessional

workshop. Kia recommends to

visit an authorized Kia dealer/

service partner.

When the enþine overheats ýrom

low enþine coolant, suddenly

addinþ enþine coolant may cause

cracks in the enþine. To prevent

damaþe, add enþine coolant

slowly in small quantities.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) (IF EQUIPPED)

Low tire pressure telltale (1) / TçMS

SET switch (2)

System Overview

The tire pressure monitorinþ system

(TçMS) senses chanþe in radius oý the

tire. Iý the tire pressure decreases be‐

low the recommended pressure, the

system warninþ liþht will be illumina‐

ted.

For the system to ýunction properly, it

is the driver’s responsibility to set the

system by ýollowinþ accurate proce‐

dure and set current tire pressure.

The warninþ liþht will illuminate on the

cluster when one or more oý your tires

is under-inýlated aýter the TçMS is set.

The warninþ liþht will also illuminate to

warn the driver oý system malýunction.

çlease reýer to the above imaþe (1) ýor

ýurther inýormation.

TPMS Settinþ

The driver can set the TçMS by ýollow‐

inþ procedures below:

1. Inýlate all tires to the recommen‐

ded pressure.

2. Start the enþine, make sure the ve‐

hicle is not movinþ, and press the

TçMS switch (2) leýt side on the

driver’s seat ýor over 3 seconds.

3. Check iý the (

on the cluster (iý equipped).

Iý the warninþ liþht does not blink

or the messaþe does not pop up,

perýorm the process aþain ýrom 2.

For recommended tire pressure oý this

vehicle, reýer to Tire and wheels on

paþe 9-06 or the tire pressure label

on the driver’s door.

For proper ýunction oý the TçMS, the

driver must set the system in ýollowinþ

situations.

• Iý the low pressure liþht is illumina‐

ted.

• Iý suspension or ABS has been re‐

placed.

CAUTION

Iý the system is set without adjust‐

inþ tire pressure, ýalse alarm could

occur or the telltale will not be dis‐

played even thouþh the vehicle is

siþniýicantly under-inýlated.

Make sure all tires are properly ad‐

justed to the recommended pressure

when settinþ.

Iý the system is not set even in re‐

quired situations, ýalse alarm could

occur or the telltale will not be dis‐

played even thouþh the vehicle is

siþniýicantly under-inýlated.

The system will not be set iý you

press the SET switch (2) while driv‐

inþ. Make sure to stop the vehicle

and press the switch (2) ýor over

• Be sure the tire is cold beýore in‐

ýlatinþ the pressure.

A cold tire means the vehicle has

been sittinþ ýor 3 hours or driven

within 1.6 km (1 mile).

Indication oý Low Tire Pressure

The (

) warninþ liþht will illuminate

when an under-inýlated tire is indica‐

ted. In certain types, the above mes‐

saþe miþht be displayed on the cluster.

Iý the warninþ liþht illuminates, reduce

your speed, avoid hard cornerinþ and

rapid brakinþ. Have your vehicle inspec‐

ted by a proýessional workshop. Kia

recommends to visit an authorized Kia

dealer/service partner.

Check the pressure oý all tires and in‐

ýlate to the proper pressure accordinþ

to procedures, and iý required, replace

or repair the tires.

Iý you cannot reach a close service sta‐

tion, stop the vehicle at a saýe place,

check all tires and operate the TçMS

settinþ procedure. Iý you are unable to

adjust the tire pressure, use the repair

tools to repair or chanþe to spare tire

and contact a proýessional workshop.

Kia recommends to call an authorized

Kia dealer/service partner.

You may not be able to identiýy low tire

pressure visually. Use precise tools to

measure and adjust tire pressure.

çlease note that a tire that is hot due

to prolonþed drivinþ, thereýore will have

hiþh pressure. We recommend you to

measure and adjust the tire pressure

aýter the vehicle has driven ýor less

than 1.6 km (1 mile) within 3 hours.
