Assembly

1

Place the crownwheel 48 onto the
differential housing half 52 and screw in
two bolts 49 opposite each other.

2

Tighten the bolts alternately until the
crownwheel abuts the differential housing
half.

3

Fit the remaining bolts.

4

Mount the differential housing half in a
press to prevent it from twisting when the
crownwheel bolts are tightened. Use support
ring 99 139 and drift 87 579. Press with
100-150 kN.

5

Tighten the crownwheel bolts. Tightening
torque 1000 Nm.

Alternative tightening method:

Tighten the crownwheel bolts with a torque
wrench to 300 Nm first. Mark the
crownwheel at the socket and then tighten a
further 40

°

. This will provide a clamping

force corresponding to 1000 Nm.

40

°

can be marked out on a socket in the

following way.

Example:

Measure the diameter of the socket with a
sliding caliper, e.g. 46 mm. Multiply with
3.14 to obtain the circumference of the
socket: 46 x 3.14 = 144 mm.

40

°

is the same as one ninth of a revolution.

Divide the circumference 144 mm by 9 to
give 16 mm. Mark two lines on the
circumference of the socket 16 mm apart.

6

Fit a new lock washer 51 on the crownwheel
bolts. Drive down the washer using drift
98 574 over one bolt head at a time until the
top of the washer is flush with the top of the
bolt head.

7

Continue driving down the lock washer
around each bolt head until the washer abuts
the crownwheel.

8

Fit the retaining ring 50 with retaining ring
pliers 587 311.

9

Place the differential housing on support
ring 99 139 and press on the bearing with
drift 98 364.

IMPORTANT! The parts must not be mixed up
when assembling. Assemble the differential
housing according to the marks made earlier. If
one part is damaged and needs to be renewed,
all the other parts must be renewed as well.

10 Turn over the differential housing. Fit a

bearing washer 53 with the guide collars in
the holes, lubricate differential gear 57 with
oil and insert it.

11 Lubricate the four differential pinions 55

and the bearing washers 54 with oil and fit
them onto the differential spider.

12 Fit the differential spider in the differential

housing half.

13 Position the remaining differential gear on

the differential pinions. Lubricate the gear
and bearing surfaces with oil.

14 Secure the remaining bearing washer with

grease in the other differential housing half
and put together the two halves.

15 Use drift 87 579 and clamp together the two

halves in a press with 20-30 kN and tighten
the bolts. Tightening torque 120 Nm.

16 Rotate one of the differential gears by

turning a drive shaft and check that the
differential pinions can rotate.

17 Press on the bearing with drift 87 932 and

98 524.
