Setting tooth clearance and differential
housing bearing preload
1
Set up dial gauge 98 075 perpendicular to
one of the teeth on the crownwheel. Zero the
dial.
2
Adjust the tooth clearance by moving the
whole differential housing sideways using
the adjusting rings. Turn both the rings
equal amounts and make sure the ring
notches correspond with the holes for the
split pins.
3
The tooth clearance must be 0.30-0.41 mm
on all gear ratios except 5.88, where the
clearance must be 0.25-0.36 mm. It is better
to be closer to the minimum limit as the
clearance can increase slightly when the
bearing caps are tightened. Take
measurements at 4 points and calculate the
average.
4
Tighten the bearing cap bolts to 330 Nm.
Rotate the crownwheel ten or so times and
check the tooth clearance.
Note: Make sure all the bearing rollers are
rotating and not sliding. Alternatively, use a
screwdriver to feel whether any of them are
loose. When the central gear is positioned with
the crownwheel upwards, check the bearing
preload at the top bearing.
5
Fit the split pins.

Checking mesh image
1
Apply a thin layer of colour marker on two
adjacent teeth. Turn the crownwheel one
half turn and repeat the procedure.
2
Make sure the colour marker makes contact
with the pinion. Rotate the end yoke a few
turns in either direction. Meanwhile, brake
the crownwheel with your hand.
3
Make sure the mesh image corresponds with
figure 1 on both the leading and trailing
flanks of the teeth.
4
If the image is similar to figure 2 then the
pinion is too far from the centre of the
crownwheel.
If the image is similar to figure 3 then the
pinion is too close to the centre of the
crownwheel.
Adjust the pinion and crownwheel in the
direction of the arrows and maintain the
prescribed tooth clearance.

Fitting the differential lock
1
Apply locking compound 561 200 to the
bearing bracket bolts 36 and fit the bearing
bracket 35 with lever 34 into the gear
housing 36.
2
Fit together coupling half 43 and thrust ring
44 with a bearing washer 45 on either side
of the thrust ring. Fit the retaining ring 46.
