17 Turn the gear housing and place the pinion

on support drift 98 332, drift 99 253 and
assembly drift 98 364.

18 Press in place the transfer gear using drift

87 932.

19 Fit the spacing ring 6 and the front pinion

bearing 7. Use drift 87 932 to press together
the bearings with max. 70-80 kN. Rotate the
gear housing at the same time. Stop pressing
if the gear housing becomes difficult to
rotate and change to a thicker shim or longer
spacing ring.

Note: The larger diameter of the spacing ring
must be placed against the transfer gear.

20 Attach a dynamometer to the gear housing

in the hole closest to the differential lock
operation. Measure the force required to
rotate the gear housing.

The bearing preload is correct when the
rolling resistance measured with the
dynamometer is 8-14 N with worn bearings
and 25-45 N with new bearings at a press
force of 70-80 kN.

Shims are available in thickness 0.30, 0.40
and 0.50 mm.

Spacing rings are available in lengths 22.48,
22.50, 22.52, 22.54 and 22.56 mm.

21 Lay a wooden board on the press bench for

the pinion to fall onto. Press out the pinion
with drift 99 135. Keep the shims and
spacing rings. Take out the transfer gear.
The pinion is to be refitted when the planet
wheel carrier has been adjusted.

22 Turn over the gear housing so that the front

section points down as illustrated.

23 Insert the pinion transfer gear 4 into the gear

housing with the unsplined section of the
hub facing the rear end of the housing
(upward).

Unsplined side up

24 Fit the planet wheel carrier transfer gear 37

with the unsplined side of the hub towards
the front cover (downward).

25 Lift up the gear housing and place it on the

planet wheel carrier, aligning the splines on
the transfer gear with the corresponding
splines on the planet wheel carrier.

26 Fit spacing ring 36 and bearing 38 and press

lightly on the inner bearing ring using two
thrust elements 98 614, drift 99 221 and
shank 98 450.

27 Rotate the gear housing while increasing the

press force on the bearing up to 70-80 kN.

28 Mount the dial gauge 98 075 on the

magnetic foot in the gear housing. The tip of
the dial gauge must rest against drift 99 221.
Zero the dial.

29 Lift up the housing with two crowbars and

read the bearing clearance. The clearance
should be 0.02-0.10 mm.

Adjust the bearing clearance if necessary by
changing shims of spacing ring.

Shims are available in thickness 0.30, 0.40
and 0.50 mm.

Spacing rings are available in lengths 12.30,
12.32, 12.34, 12.36 and 12.38 mm.

30 Fit locking tool 98 615.

31 Tighten the nut 38 with key 98 440.

Tightening torque 400 Nm.

32 Lock the nut by staking its collar into the

four grooves in the planet wheel carrier.

33 Refit the pinion, see "Adjusting pinion

position and bearing preload", points
14-19. Tighten the nut using socket 98 480.
Tightening torque 600 Nm.

34 Remove the locking tool 98 615 and fit the

cover 55 with a new gasket 54 over the
transfer gear.

35 Fit the cover over the pinion nut. Insert the

cover under the planet wheel carrier and
drive down the cover with a plastic hammer.
