Inspection and Adjustment
Steering Operation
Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position,
and measure the distance the steering wheel can be
turned without moving the front wheels.
ROTATIONAL PLAY: 0 - 10 mm (0 - 0.39 in)
If the play exceeds the service limit, perform rack guide
adjustment (see page
).
If the play is still excessive after rack guide adjustment,
inspect the steering linkage and gearbox (see page
).
Power Assist Check with Vehicle
Parked
1. Check the power steering fluid level (see page
and pump belt tension (see page
).
2. Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steer-
ing wheel from lock-to-lock several times to warm
up the fluid.
3. Attach a spring scale to the steering wheel. With the
engine idling and the vehicle on a clean, dry floor,
pull the scale as shown. Rotate the steering wheel
more than 90 degree angle by pulling the spring
scale. Read the figure on the spring scale while the
steering wheel is in motion.
4. The scale should read no more then 25 N (2.6 kgf,
5.7 Ibf). If it reads more, go on to step 5.
5. Stop the engine. Disconnect the sensor inlet hose
from the power steering speed sensor, and plug the
hose and the sensor fitting as shown.
6. Start the engine, and let it idle.
• If the reading is still more than 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7
Ibf) the power steering speed sensor is OK.
Problem is in the pump or valve body unit (see
General Troubleshooting).
• If the reading is now 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7 Ibf) or less,
power steering speed sensor leaks internally.
Replace the sensor (see page
).

Assist Check at Road Speed
Assist (excessively light steering) at high speed:
1. Check the power steering fluid level (see page
),
and pump belt tension (see page
).
2. Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steering
wheel from lock-to-lock several times to warm up the
fluid.
3. Stop the engine. To simulate speeds above 62 mph
(100 km/h), disconnect the hoses from the power
steering speed sensor, and connect them to the
bypass tube joint. Plug the end of the bypass tube
joint.
Power Steering Speed Sensor
Replacement
1. Disconnect the VSS connector from the power steer-
ing speed sensor.
2. Remove the sensor mounting bolt, then remove the
power steering speed sensor from the differential
housing.
3. Disconnect the sensor inlet and outlet hoses, and
plug the hose fittings.
4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
5. After installing a new sensor, turn the steering
wheel lock-to-lock with the engine idling to bleed air
from the system.
6. Check the reservoir, and add fluid if necessary.
BYPASS TUBE JOINT
(Included with
4. Attach a spring scale to the steering wheel.
Start the engine; with the engine idling and the vehi-
cle on a clean, dry floor, pull the scale as shown.
Rotate the steering wheel more than 90 degrees by
pulling the spring scale. Read the figure on the
spring scale while the steering wheel is in motion.
• If the scale reads more than 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7
Ibf), the valve body unit is OK.
The power steering speed sensor abnormal.
Replace the sensor, and check by roadtesting.
• If the reading is now 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7 Ibf) or less,
problem is in the valve body unit or pump (see
General Troubleshooting).
