Replacement
1. Remove the instrument panel (see
).
2. Remove the screws from the gauge assembly, and
spread a protective cloth on the upper column cover.

Replacement
1. Disconnect the 3P connector from the vehicle speed
sensor (VSS).
NOTE: The VSS drive link is a very small part; be
careful not to lose it.

2. Remove the two mounting bolts, then remove the
VSS.
3. Install in the reverse order of removal.
3. Disconnect the connectors, and remove the gauge
assembly.
4. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Troubleshooting
Before testing, inspect the No. 13 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
Test the YEL wire:
1. Disconnect the 3P connector
from the vehicle speed sensor.
2. Connect the test harness
) only to
the VSS sub-harness.
3. Connect the Whitest harness
clip to the positive probe of a
voltmeter.
4. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
Is there battery voltage?
Repair open in the YEL wire
between the VSS and under-
dash fuse/relay box.
NO
YES
Test the BLU/WHT wire:
1. Disconnect the WHT test har-
ness clip.
2. Connect the GRN test harness
clip to the positive probe of a
voltmeter.
Is there 5 V or more?
NO
Repair short in the BLU/WHT wire
between the VSS and
— PCM,
— cruise control unit,
— steering column control unit,
— multiplex control unit (driver's),
— navigation control unit.

Test the GRN/BLU wire:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect the test harness.
3. Disconnect the PCM 22P con-
nector.
4. Check for continuity between
the PCM 22P connector No. 22
terminal and VSS 3P connec-
tor No. 1.
Is there continuity?
NO
YES
Repair open in the GRN/BLU
wire between the VSS and PCM.

Replace the VSS.

Repair open in the BLU/WHT
wire between the VSS and the
speedometer.
Does the meter indicate pulsing
voltage?
YES
NO
Replace the speedometer.
Speedometer Test:
1. Disconnect the 22P connector
"A" from the gauge assembly.
2. Touch a probe to the BLU/
WHT wire, and connect it to
body ground through a volt-
meter.
3. Slowly rotate one wheel with
the other wheel blocked.
Does voltage pulse from 0 to
approx. 5 V or more?
Test the VSS:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle,
and support it with safety
stands.
3. Put the vehicle in neutral with
the ignition switch ON (II).
4. Slowly rotate one wheel with
the other wheel blocked.
