Acura RL (1996-2004 year). Manual — part 550
DTC 54: Valve relay
Check the VSA (20 A) fuse in the
under-hood fuse/relay box, and
reinstall the fuse if it is OK.
Is the fuse OK?
Replace the fuse, and recheck. If
the fuse is blown, check for a
short to body ground in this fuse
circuit. If the circuit is OK,
replace the VSA modulator-con-
trol unit.
Check for an open in the +B-FSR
circuit:
1. Disconnect the VSA control
unit 42P connector.
2. Measure the voltage between
the VSA control unit 42P con-
nector terminal No. 6 and
body ground.
VSA CONTROL UNIT 42P CONNECTOR
Wire side of female terminals
Is there battery voltage?
Repair open in the wire between
the VSA (20 A) fuse and the VSA
control unit.
Problem verification:
1. Connect the VSA control unit
42P connector.
2. Clear the DTC.
3. Test drive the vehicle.
4. Verify the DTC.
Is DTC 54 indicated?
The system is OK at this time.
Check for loose terminals in the
VSA control unit 42P connector.
If necessary, substitute a known-
good VSA modulator-control
unit, and recheck.

DTC 55: Sub Throttle Motor Fail-safe Relay
Check the TCS (20 A) fuse in the
under-hood fuse/relay box, and
reinstall the fuse if it is OK.
Is the fuse OK?
Check the fail-safe relay in the
under-hood relay box C, and
leave the relay removed (see
).
Is the relay OK?
Check for a short to body ground
in the STM FSR circuit:
1. Disconnect the VSA converter
unit 26P connector.
2. Check for continuity between
terminal No. 12 and body
ground.
Is there continuity?
Check for a short to power in the
+B-STM circuit:
1. Turn the ignition switch ON
(II).
2. Measure the voltage between
the VSA converter unit 26P
connector terminal No. 14
and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
Check for an open in the STM
FSR circuit:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Reinstall the fail-safe relay.
3. Turn the ignition switch ON
(II).
4. Measure the voltage between
the VSA converter unit 26P
connector terminal No. 12
and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
Replace the fuse, and recheck. If
the fuse is blown, check for a
short to body ground in this fuse
circuit. If the circuit is OK,
replace the VSA converter unit.
Replace the fail-safe relay.

DTC 58: Engine Speed Signal
Check for a short to body ground
in the NEP circuit:
1. Disconnect the VSA converter
unit 26P connector, the PCM
connector C (12P) and the
gauge assembly 22P connec-
tor.
2. Check for continuity between
the PCM connector C (12P)
t e r m i n a l No. 8 and body
ground.
Is there continuity?
Check the PCM:
1. Connect the PCM connector C
(12P).
2. Start the engine.
3. Measure the voltage between
the PCM connector C (12P) ter-
minal No. 8 and body ground.
Is there about 6 V ?
Check for an open in the NEP cir-
cuit:
Measure the voltage between the
VSA converter unit 26P connec-
tor terminal No. 21 and body
ground.
Is there about 6 V?
The system is OK at this time.
If the problem recurs, replace
the VSA converter unit.
