37. Check the two control valves.
NOTE: If the valves are damaged, replace the steer-
ing gearbox as an assembly.
Assist Control Valve:
• Inspect its surface for scoring and scratches.
• Slip it back into the valve body unit, and make
sure it slides smoothly without drag or side play.
38. Separate the valve body and valve housing.
39. Remove the housing seal and dowel pins from the
valve body unit.
Pressure Control Valve:
• Inspect its surface for scoring and scratches.
• Slip it back into the valve body unit, and make
sure it slides smoothly without drag or side play.
36. Remove the pressure control valve, assist control
valve and springs from the valve body.

Reassembly
NOTE:
• Clean the disassembled parts with a solvent, and dry them with compressed air. Do not dip the rubber parts in a sol-
vent.
• Always replace the O-rings and rubber seals with new ones before assembly.
• Apply the recommended power steering fluid to the parts indicated in the assembly procedures.
• Do not allow dust, dirt, or other foreign materials to enter the power steering system.
• Use the appropriate special tools where necessary.

2. Install the valve springs.
3. Coat the pressure control valve and assist control
valve with power steering fluid, then install them
into the valve body.

DRIVER
Valve body unit:
6. Apply power steering fluid to the seal ring lip of the
valve oil seal, then install the seal in the valve hous-
ing using a hydraulic press and the special tools as
shown.
CAUTION: Install the valve oil seal with its grooved
side facing the tool.
4. Coat the cap seal with power steering fluid, and
install the it in the groove of the cap.
5. Install the cap on the valve body.
Valve Body Unit Reassembly
Assist control valve unit:
1. Coat the housing seal with power steering fluid, and
install it in the groove of the valve housing.
Then install the valve body.

9. Install the backup ring ('96 - 98 models) or wave
washer ('99 - 01 models).
10. Coat the inside surface of the new valve oil seal
with power steering fluid.
11. Slide the valve oil seal over the pinion shaft, being
careful not to damage the sealing lip.
CAUTION: Install the valve oil seal with its grooved
side facing opposite the bearing.
16. Apply power steering fluid to the inside of the spe-
cial tool. Set the larger diameter end of the special
tool over the valve seal ring.
17. Move the special tool up and down several times to
make the valve seal ring fit in the pinion shaft.
18. Remove the special tool.
19. Turn the special tool over, and set the smaller diame-
ter end of the special tool over the valve seal ring.
Move the special tool up and down several times to
make the valve seal ring fit snugly in the pinion shaft.
13. Fit the new O-ring in the groove of the pinion shaft.
Then slide the new valve seal ring over the shaft
and the groove in on the pinion shaft.
14. Remove the vinyl tape from the pinion shaft.
15. Apply power steering fluid to the surface of the
valve seal ring that was installed on the pinion shaft.

8. Apply vinyl tape to the stepped portion of the pin-
ion shaft, and coat the surface of the vinyl tape with
the power steering fluid.

7. Press the new roller bearing into the valve housing
using a hydraulic press and the special tools as shown.
NOTE: Place the roller bearing on the valve hous-
ing with the stamped letter facing up towards the
valve side.

12. Apply vinyl tape to the splines and stepped portion
of the shaft, and coat the surface of the vinyl tape
with the power steering fluid.
