Acura RL (1996-2004 year). Manual — part 344
Piston Pins
Removal
1. Apply engine oil to the piston pin snap rings, and
turn them in the ring grooves until the end gaps are
lined up with the cutouts in the piston pin bores.
NOTE: Take care not to damage the ring grooves.

2. Remove both snap rings. Start at the cutout in the
piston pin bore.
NOTE: Remove the snap rings carefully so they do
not go flying or get lost. Wear eye protection.

3. Heat the piston and connecting rod assembly to
approximately 158°F (70°C), then remove the piston
pin.
Work carefully to prevent getting
burned.
NOTE: Inspect the piston, piston pin and connecting
rod when they are at the room temperature.

Connecting Rods
Selection
Each rod falls into one of four tolerance ranges (from 0 to
0.024 mm (0.0009 in), in 0.006 mm (0.0002 in) increments)
depending on the size of its big end bore.
It's then stamped with a number (1, 2, 3 or 4/I,
I
l,
II
l or
III
l) indicating the range. You may find any combination
of 1, 2, 3 or 4/I,
I
l,
II
l or
III
l in any engine.
Normal Bore Size: 57.0 mm (2.24 in)
NOTE:
• Reference numbers or bars are for big end bore size
and do not indicate the position of the rod in the
engine.
• Inspect each connecting rod for cracks and heat dam-
age.
CONNECTING ROD BORE
REFERENCE NUMBER or BAR
Half of number is stamped on
bearing cap, the other half on
connecting rod.
Inspect bolts
and nuts for
stress cracks.

Piston Pins
Inspection
NOTE: Inspect the piston, piston pin and connecting rod
when they are at room temperature.
1. Measure the diameter of the piston pin.
Piston Pin Diameter:
Standard (New): 21.961 - 21.965 mm
(0.8646 - 0.8648 in)
Service Limit: 21.953 mm (0.8643 in)
2. Zero the dial indicator to the piston pin diameter.
4. Measure the piston pin-to-connecting rod clearance.
Piston Pin-to-Connecting Rod Clearance:
Standard (New): 0.005 - 0.015 mm
(0.0002 - 0.0006 in)
Service Limit: 0.02 mm (0.0008 in)
3. Check the difference between the piston pin diame-
ter and piston pin hole diameter on the piston.
NOTE: Check the piston for distortion or cracks.
Piston Pin-to-Piston Clearance:
Standard (New): -0.005 to +0.002 mm
(-0.0002 to +0.0001 in)
Service Limit: 0.005 mm (0.0002 in)
