Acura RL (1996-2004 year). Manual — part 388
Check for a short in the PSP
switch:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect the 2P connector
from the PSP switch.
3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
4. Measure voltage between PCM
connector terminals B3 and A26.
Is there battery voltage?
NO

scribed voltage is now available,
replace the original PCM.

Check for an open in the wire
(BKSW line):
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Measure voltage between PCM

Idle Air Control Thermal Valve
Description
To prevent erratic running when the engine is warming
up, it is necessary to raise the idle speed. The idle air
control thermal valve is controlled by a thermowax
plunger. When the engine is cold, the engine coolant
surrounding the thermowax contracts the plunger,
allowing additional air to be bypassed into the intake
manifold so that the engine idles faster. When the
engine reaches operating temperature, the valve closes,
reducing the amount of air bypassing into the intake
manifold.

Inspection
NOTE: The idle air control thermal valve is factory
adjusted; it should not be disassembled.
1. Remove the cover of the idle air control thermal
valve.
2. Start the engine.
3. Put your finger on the valve seat area, and make sure
that there is air flow with the engine cold (engine
coolant temperature below 86°F, 30°C) and idling.

4. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no
load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes
on, then let it idle.
5. Check that the valve is completely closed. If not, air
suction can be felt in the valve seat area.
If any suction is felt, the valve is leaking.
Check engine coolant level and for air in the engine
cooling system (see
If the cooling system is OK, replace the idle air control
thermal valve and recheck.
NOTE: If the cover of idle air control thermal valve was
removed, do the PCM reset procedure.

Inspection/Adjustment
NOTE:
• Before setting the idle speed, check the following
items:
— The MIL has not been reported on.
— Ignition timing
— Spark plugs
— Air cleaner
— PCV system
• (Canada) Depress the parking brake pedal. Start the
engine, then check that the headlights are off.
1. Connect a OBDII scan tool (see page
) or
tachometer.
• Connect a tachometer to igniter unit secondary
loop (white-taped).
• Remove the rubber cap from the tachometer
connector and connect a tachometer.

3. Disconnect the IAC valve connector.

4. If the engine stalls, start the engine with the acceler-
ator pedal slightly depressed. Stabilize the rpm at
1,000, then slowly release the pedal until the engine
idles.
5. Check idling under the following conditions: head-
lights (Hi) and rear defogger on, blower fan, radia-
tor fan, and air conditioner are not operating.
Idle speed should be:
480 50 rpm
(in Park or neutral)
Adjust the idle speed, if necessary, by turning the
idle adjusting screw.
NOTE: After adjusting the idle speed in this step,
recheck the ignition timing (see
).
If it is out of spec, go back to step 4.
