shift position is in "R". Do not hold the shift cable guide (A) to adjust the shift cable (B). See Fig. 10 .

9. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

10. Insert .24" (6 mm) pin (A) through the positioning hole (B) on the shift lever bracket base and into the

positioning hole (C) on the shift lever. The shift lever is secured in the "R" position. See Fig. 11 .

11. Align the socket holder (A) on the shift cable (B) with the slot in the bracket base (C). Slide the holder

into base. Install the shift cable end (D) over the mounting stud (E) by aligning its square hole (F) with
the square fitting (G) at the bottom of the stud. See Fig. 12 . Push the holder until it snaps securely in
place. Do not install the shift cable by twisting the shift cable guide (H).

12. Verify that the shift cable end (A) is properly installed on the mounting stud (B). See Fig. 13 .

If improperly installed, remove the shift cable from the shift lever bracket base, and reinstall the shift
cable.

14. Install and tighten the shift cable end nut to the specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See

Fig. 8 .

15. Remove the .24" (6.0 mm) pin (A) that was installed to hold the shift lever. See Fig. 11 .

16. Move the shift lever to each position, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator matches the A/T

range switch.

17. Allow the font wheels to rotate freely.

18. Start the engine, and check the shift lever operation in all gears.

19. Push the shift lock release, and verify that the shift lever releases. Reinstall the center console. See

CENTER CONSOLE under REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.

TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH

Removal & Installation

1. Raise the vehicle. Ensure that it is securely supported.

2. Move shift lever to "N" position.

3. Remove the transmission range switch cover. See Fig. 21 .

4. Disconnect the range switch connector. See Fig. 22 .

5. Remove the transmission range switch, and install the new switch.

Ensure the selector control shaft is in the "N" position. If necessary, move the shift lever to the "N"

NOTE:

DO NOT install the shift cable end on the mounting stud while the shift
cable is on the shift cable bracket base.

CAUTION: DO NOT use the selector control shaft to adjust the shift position. If

the selector control shaft tips are squeezed together, it will cause a
faulty signal or position due to play between the selector control
shaft and the switch.

position. See Fig. 23 .

7. Align the cutouts (A) on the rotary-frame with the neutral positioning cutouts (B) on the transmission

range switch (C), then put a .08" (2.0 mm) feeler gauge blade (D) in the cutouts to hold the switch in the
"N" position. See Fig. 24 .

8. Install the transmission range switch (A) gently on the selector control shaft (B) while holding it in the

"N" position with the .08" (2.0 mm) blade (C). See Fig. 25 .

Tighten the bolts on the transmission range switch to specification while continuing to hold the feeler
gauge in the "N" position. See Fig. 26 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove the feeler gauge
blade.

10. Connect the connector securely. Install the transmission range switch cover (A). See Fig. 21 .

11. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). Move the shift lever through all positions, and check the transmission

range switch synchronization with the A/T gear position indicator.

12. Check that the engine will start in "P" and "N" positions, and will not start in any other shift lever

position. Check that the back-up lights illuminates when the shift lever is in "R" position.

13. Allow the front wheels to rotate freely, then start the engine, and check the shift lever operation. Install

the transmission range switch cover.

NOTE:

Take care not to move the transmission range switch when tightening
bolts.
