1. GENERAL
1.1 LINES
Supply line
The supply line connects the reservoir to the
steering pump and consists partly of a thick,
flexible rubber hose and, within the engine
enclosure, it is made of a steel pipe.
The hose is attached to the reservoir with a hose
clamp.
As the steering pump is of the non-regenerative
type, the reservoir should be fitted at a certain
height over the steering pump.
The length of the supply line also influences the
steering pump operation.
If the reservoir is moved, thus making the supply
line longer, the reservoir should also be fitted
higher.
Delivery line
The delivery line connects the steering pump to
the steering box and consists partly of a rubber
hose with an internal, braided, steel casing and
partly of a steel pipe. The admissible pressure is
marked on the line.
The line is connected to the steering pump and
the steering box using a union nut connection.
Return line
The return line connects the steering box to the
reservoir and consists partly of a steel pipe and
partly of a flexible rubber hose with a textile
sheath.
The line is connected to the steering box with a
union nut connection and to the reservoir with a
hose clamp.

1.2 OPERATION OF THE RESERVOIR
General
The reservoir can be made of plastic or steel.
The reservoir is equipped with a filter element,
which filters the return oil.
The filter is not fitted into the supply line as this
would increase the filter resistance of the filter
element and, as a result, the reservoir would
have to be very large.
When working on the steering gear,
prevent dirt from entering the
reservoir or the lines. The steering
oil is drawn in unfiltered, allowing
impurities to enter into the steering
gear.
A by-pass valve is fitted under the filter. If the
resistance in the filter is excessive, e.g. because
of cold oil or a polluted filter, the by-pass valve
opens. Part of the oil will flow into the reservoir
without being filtered.
A dipstick is located at the top of the reservoir with
a minimum and maximum oil level mark.
A small bleeding hole is fitted in the rubber
dipstick cap. This hole should never be blocked,
as the return pressure would become too high.
