TROUBLESHOOTING
MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MPI) <4A9>
13A-239
OPERATION
• When the ignition switch is turned to the "START"
position and the clutch switch is in ON position
(the clutch is depressed), the starter relay turns
on.
• If the ignition switch is turned to "START" posi-
tion, battery voltage is applied to the starter (Ter-
minal No.1) through the starter relay.
• If the ignition switch is tuned to "START" position
battery voltage is applied to engine-ECU (termi-
nal No.39) from ignition switch. Because of this,
engine ECU detects that the engine is cranked.
COMMENT ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM
• Failure is possibly caused by failed starter itself
or failed related circuit.
PROBABLE CAUSES
• Failed battery
• Failed starter motor
• Open/short circuit in starter associated circuit or
loose connector contact
DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
STEP 1. Check battery voltage.
• Measure battery voltage at cranking.
OK: 8 V or higher
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 2 .
NO :
Check battery (Refer to GROUP 54A
−
Battery
− On-vehicle Service − Battery Test
).
STEP 2. M.U.T.-III data list
• Item 18: Cranking signal
OK:
ON (Ignition switch: ST)
OFF (Ignition switch: ON)
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 17 .
NO :
Go to Step 3 .
STEP 3. Connector check: B-105 starter relay
connector
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 4 .
NO :
Repair or replace.
STEP 4. Check starter relay.
• Check starter relay (Refer to GROUP 16 − Start-
ing system
− Starter relay check
).
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 5 .
NO :
Replace starter relay.
STEP 5. Perform voltage measurement at B-105
starter relay connector.
• Disconnect connector, and measure at the har-
ness side.
• Ignition switch: ST
• Voltage between terminal No. 1, 3 and earth.
OK: System voltage
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 8 .
NO :
Go to Step 6 .

STEP 6. Connector check: B-141 ignition switch
connector
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 7 .
NO :
Repair or replace.
STEP 7. Check ignition switch.
• Check ignition switch (Refer to GROUP 54 − Igni-
tion Switch
− Ignition Switch − Inspection
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Check intermediate connector B-129, and
repair if necessary. If intermediate
connector is normal, check and repair
harness between B-141 (terminal No. 5)
ignition switch connector and B-105 starter
relay connector.
• Check power supply line for
open/short circuit.
NO :
Replace ignition switch.
STEP 8. Connector check: B-60 clutch switch
connector
Q: Is the check result normal?
YES :
Go to Step 9 .
NO :
Repair or replace.

STEP 10. Perform voltage measurement at B-60
clutch switch connector.
• Disconnect connector, and measure at the har-
ness side
• Ignition switch: ST
• Voltage between terminal No. 2 and earth.
OK: System voltage
Q: Is the check result normal?
