Mitsubishi Montero Sport (2004+). Manual — part 184
MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) DIAGNOSIS
TSB Revision
MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI)
13A-149
.
CIRCUIT OPERATION
• A 5-volt power supply is applied on the TPS
power terminal (terminal No. 4) from the PCM
(terminal No. 46).
The ground terminal (terminal No. 1) is grounded
with PCM (terminal No. 57).
• When the throttle valve shaft is turned from the
idle position to the fully opened position, the
resistor between the TPS output terminal (termi-
nal No. 3) and ground terminal will increase
according to the rotation.
.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
• The TPS outputs voltage which corresponds to
the throttle valve opening angle.
• The PCM checks whether the voltage is within a
specified range. In addition, it checks that the
voltage output does not become too high while
the engine is at idle.
.
DESCRIPTIONS OF MONITOR METHODS
Throttle position sensor output voltage is out of spec-
ified range.

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tools:
• MB991958: Scan Tool (MUT-III Sub Assembly)
• MB991824: V.C.I
• MB991827: USB Cable
• MB991911: Main Harness B
STEP 1. Using scan tool MB991958, check data list item 14:
Throttle Position Sensor.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to scan tool MB991958, always turn the
ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before con-
necting or disconnecting scan tool MB991958.
(1) Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3) Set scan tool MB991958 to the data reading mode for item
14, Throttle Position Sensor.
• With the throttle valve in the idle position, voltage should
measure between 0.535 and 0.735 volt.
• With the throttle valve in the full-open position, voltage
should measure between 4.5 and 5.5 volts.
(4) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the sensor operating properly?
YES : It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent.
Refer to GROUP 00, How to Use
Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points
NO : Go to Step 2.
STEP 2. Check connector A-41 at throttle position sensor
for damage.
Q: Is the connector in good condition?
YES : Go to Step 3.
NO : Repair or replace it. Refer to GROUP 00E, Harness
Connector Inspection
. Then go to Step 10.

STEP 3. Measure the sensor supply voltage at throttle
position sensor harness side connector A-41.
(1) Disconnect the connector A-41 and measure at the harness
side.
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3) Measure the voltage between terminal No. 4 and ground.
• Voltage should be between 4.8 and 5.2 volts.
(4) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the measured voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts?
YES : Go to Step 6.
NO : Go to Step 4.
STEP 4. Check connector C-90 at PCM for damage.
Q: Is the connector in good condition?
YES : Go to Step 5.
NO : Repair or replace it. Refer to GROUP 00E, Harness
Connector Inspection
. Then go to Step 10.
