*AVERAGE FUEL INOPERATIVE OR WRONG
*CMTC FAILS TO RESPOND TO INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMING
*DISTANCE TO EMPTY INOPERATIVE OR WRONG
*ELAPSED TIME INOPERATIVE OR WRONG
*INSTANT FUEL INOPERATIVE OR WRONG
*SWITCH ON CMTC INOPERATIVE
*TRIP ODOMETER INOPERATIVE OR WRONG
Test Note:
All symptoms listed above are diagnosed using the same tests.
The title for the tests will be *AVERAGE FUEL INOPERATIVE
OR WRONG.

NOTE: Ensure that the PCI Bus is operating correctly.
NOTE: Diagnose and repair any PCM or Communication DTCs before
proceeding.
NOTE: If condition concerns Average Fuel, Instant Fuel, or Distance to
Empty; Ensure that the CMTC is programmed to the correct fuel tank
capacity. With the DRBIII
t, select Body, Compass Mini-Trip, Miscellaneous,
then Calibrate Fuel Tank.
If all the possible causes above are operating properly, view repair.

Repair
Refer to the DRIVEABILITY category for symptom(s) related to
the fuel level and odometer. If OK, Replace and program the
Compass/Mini-Trip Computer in accordance with the Service
Information.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.

Symptom:
*CMTC SEGMENTS FAIL TO ILLUMINATE
POSSIBLE CAUSES
*CMTC INTERNAL FAULT

APPLICABILITY
1
Turn the ignition off.
Depress and hold the Step and US/M buttons.
Turn the ignition on while continuing to depress the buttons.
When the segment test starts, release the buttons.
Did all of the segments illuminate?
All
Yes
→
Test Complete.
No
→
Replace and program the Compass/Mini-Trip Computer in accor-
dance with the Service Information.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.

*CMTC SELF-CHECK

NOTE: The CMTC Self Test can be performed manually or with the DRBIII
t.
With the DRBIII
t, select Body, then Compass Mini-Trip Module, then Self
Test. To perform Self Test manually, follow the procedure below.
Turn the ignition off.
Depress and hold the Step and US/M buttons on the CMTC.
Turn the ignition on.
Continue to depress both buttons until the CMTC begins the Self-Check.
When the segment test begins, release the buttons.
When the Self-Check test is complete, the CMTC will return to normal operation or
will display either BUS or FAIL.
Does the CMTC display FAIL?
All
Yes
→
Replace and program the Compass/Mini-Trip Compter in accor-
dance with the Service Information.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.
No
→

NOTE: The CMTC Self Test can be performed manually or with the DRBIII
t.
With the DRBIII
t, select body, then Compass Mini-Trip Module, then Self
Test. To perform the Self Test manually, follow the procedure below.
Turn the ignition off.
Depress and hold the Step and US/M buttons on the CMTC.
Turn on the ignition while continuing to depress the buttons.
When the CMTC begins the Self Test, release the buttons.
Observe the CMTC display.
Does the CMTC display BUS?
All
Yes
→
Refer to the COMMUNICATION category and perform the ap-
propriate symptom.
No
→
Test Complete.

Symptom:
*COMPASS/MINI TRIP COMPUTER INOPERATIVE
POSSIBLE CAUSES
*FUSED IGNITION SWITCH OUTPUT CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
*FUSED IGNITION SWITCH OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN
*GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
*COMPASS/MINI-TRIP COMPUTER

Turn off the ignition.
Inspect the #11 fuse in the Junction Block.
Cycle the ignition.
Inspect the #11 fuse in the Junction Block.
Is the #11 fuse open?
All
Yes
→
Repair the short to ground in the Fused Ignition Switch Output
circuit.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.
No
→

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the Overhead Console harness connector.
Turn the ignition on.
NOTE: Ensure the battery is fully charged.
Measure the voltage of the Fused Ignition Switch Output circuit.
Is the voltage above 10.5 volts?
All
Yes
→
No
→
Repair the open in the Fused Ignition Switch Output circuit.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the Overhead Console harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the Overhead Console Ground circuit to a known good
ground.
Is the resistance above 5.0 ohms?
All
Yes
→
Repair the open in Overhead Console ground circuit.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.
No
→
Replace and program the Compass/Mini-Trip Computer in accor-
dance with the Service Information.
Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1.
