INSPECTION START
CHECK INPUT SIGNAL CIRCUIT.
1. Turn ignition switch “OFF”.
2. Disconnect ECM harness connector
and TCM harness connector.
3. Check harness continuity between ECM
terminal

Engine Control Module (ECM)
The ECM consists of a microcomputer, diagnostic test mode
selector, and connectors for signal input and output and for power
supply. The unit controls the engine.

ECM fail-safe activating condition
The computing function of the ECM was judged to be malfunctioning.
When the fail-safe system activates, i.e. if the ECM detects a malfunction
condition in the CPU of ECM, the MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP on
the instrument panel lights to warn the driver.
However, it is not possible to access ECM and DTC cannot be confirmed.
Engine control with ECM fail-safe
When the fail-safe system is operating, fuel injection, ignition timing, fuel
pump operation, IACV-AAC valve operation and cooling fan operation are
controlled under certain limitations.
Replace ECM, if ECM fail-safe condition is confirmed.

Engine speed
Engine speed will not rise more than 3,000 rpm.
Fuel injection
Simultaneous multiport fuel injection system
Ignition timing
Ignition timing is fixed at the preset value.
Fuel pump
Fuel pump relay is “ON” when engine is running and
“OFF” when engine stalls.
Cooling fans
Cooling fan relay “ON” (High speed condition) when
engine is running, and “OFF” when engine stalls.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CONFIRMATION
PROCEDURE
NOTE:
If “DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CONFIRMATION PROCE-
DURE” has been previously conducted, always turn ignition
switch “OFF” and wait at least 5 seconds before conducting
the next test.
1) Turn ignition switch “ON”.
2) Select “DATA MONITOR” mode with CONSULT-II.
3) Start engine and run it for at least 2 seconds at idle
speed.
4) If 1st trip DTC is detected, go to “DIAGNOSTIC
PROCEDURE”, EC-357.
