Three-stage restraint system

Comprising:

z Three-point seat belts,
z Belt tensioners,
z Airbag systems for driver and passeng er.
The three stag es are a ctivated in sequence

depending on the seriousness of the
accident:
z The automa tic seat belt locking devices

prevent the belt strap from being pulled

out and thus ensure that the v ehicle
occupants are retained in their seats.

z The seat belts are pulled down at the

belt buckles. This mak es the b elts fit

snugly, the oc cup ants are decelerated
together with the v ehicle, and the body

is subjected to less stress.

z The airbag systems a re also triggered in

the ev ent of serious accidents and form a
safety cushion for the occupants.

Depending on the severity of the
accident, the airbags inflate

in two stages.

9

Warning

The airbag systems are supplementary
to the three-point seat belts and belt

tensioners, and the sea t belts must
therefore always be worn. Disregarding

these instructions may lead to injuries or
endanger life. Vehicle passengers should

be informed accordingly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

40

Seats, interior

Three-point seat belts

The v ehicle is equipped with three-point
seat b elts with autom atic retractors and

locking devices, allowing freed om of body
movement although the spring tensioned

belts are always a snug fit.
For information on correct sea ting

position – see pages 38, 42, 46.
The b elts are lock ed during rap id vehicle

acceleration or deceleration.

In the event of an accident, persons not
wearing sea t belts enda ng er their fellow

oc cup ants and themselves.
Control indica tor k for passeng er’s seat

belt – see page 43.
Control indica tor X for d riv er’s seat b elt –

see p ages 43, 57.
Sea t belts are only desig ned for use by one

person at a time. They are not suitable for
persons younger tha n 12 years of age or

sma ller than 150 cm.

Belt forc e limiters
Belt force limiters on the seats reduce the

stress on the body due to controlled release
of the belt during a collision. This m eans

that the oc cup ants m ov e forward under
control.

Inspection of belts

Plea se check all parts of the b elt system
occasionally for dama ge a nd correct

operation. H ave da maged parts replaced .
After an accid ent, hav e belts and dep loyed

belt tensioners replaced by a workshop.
Do not perform any altera tions on the

belts, their anchorages, the automatic
retrac tors or the belt buck les.
Mak e sure that b elts are not da maged or
trapped by sharp-edged objec ts.

9

Warning

Always wear your sea t belt, and that
means also in urban traffic. It can save

your life!
Also, pregnant wom en must always wea r

a seat belt – see page 43.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

41

Seats, interior

Belt tensioners

The seat belts are fitted w ith b elt
tensioners. The sea t belts are pulled d ow n

at the buckles in the event of frontal
impac ts ab ov e a certain sev erity. This

tightens the belts.

Actua tion of belt tensioners
Indicated by continuous illumination of

control indicator v in the instrum ent pa nel.
The b elt tensioners must be replaced

after activation. Consult a workshop.
Further information – see pa ge 43.

Control ind icator v for belt tensioners

The opera tion of the belt tensioners is
monitored electronically together with sea t

oc cup anc y recog nition and the airbag
systems and is ind icated by control

indica tor v.
When the ignition is switched on, the

control indicator flashes for approx.
5 seconds. If it does not flash, does not go

out a fter 5 seconds or illuminates while
driving, there is a fault in the

belt tensioners, seat oc cup anc y
recognition or the airbag systems –

see a lso pag es 45, 48. The systems may
fa il to deploy in the event of an accident.
Deploym ent of the belt tensioners is
indica ted b y continuous illum ination of v.

The system’s integrated self-diagnostics

allows faults to b e q uick ly rem edied.
Consult a workshop .

9

Warning

Have the c ause of the fault rem edied by
a workshop .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

42

Seats, interior

Im portant
z Acc essories and other objects not

specifically app rov ed for your v ehicle
type must not be a ffixed or placed within

the action zone of the belt tensioners
(near the retractor) as this could result in

injury if the belt tensioners are triggered .

z Do not m ake any modifications to the

com ponents of the belt tensioners, a s
this will render the vehic le unroadw orthy.

z The belt tensioner and airbag system

control electronics c an be found in the

centre c onsole area. In ord er to av oid
malfunctions, do not store magnetic

ob jects in this area.

z We recommend that you have the seats

rem oved by a workshop in the ev ent of

actuation of the belt tensioners.

z The belt tensioners are for single use

only, w hich is indicated by continuous
illumination of control indicator v. Hav e

deployed belt tensioners replaced by a
workshop .

z Applicable safety directives must alwa ys

be observed when disposing of the

vehicle. For this reason, disposal should
be done by an a uthorised recycling

compa ny.

Using the belts

Fitting the belt
Pull the belt out from the retractor and

guide it across the body, making c ertain
that it is not twisted.
Insert the latch plate into the buckle.
The seat back rest must not be tilted back

too far (the rec om mended m aximum tilting
angle is approx. 25

o

).

Mak e sure that the lap belt is not twisted
and that it fits snugly across the body.

Tension the belt frequently while driving by
tugging the diagonal part of the belt.

9

Warning

Inc orrect handling (e.g. removal or fitting
of b elts or belt buc kles) can deploy the

belt tensioners with risk of injury.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

43

Seats, interior

Thick layers of clothing p revent the belt

from fitting snugly. The belt must not rest
against hard or fragile objects in the

pockets of your clothing (e.g. b allpoint
pen, keys, spectacles), since this c ould

cause injury. No objects such as handbags,
mobile phones etc. must be p resent

between the belt and your body.

Opel Full Size airbag system

The airb ag system is identified by the w ord
AIRBAG on the steering wheel and above

the glove compartment.
The airbag system comprises:
z an airbag with inflator in the steering

wheel and a second one in the

instrument panel,

z control electronics with impac t sensors,
z control indicator for airbag systems v in

instrument panel,

z seat occ upa ncy rec og nition.

The airbag system is triggered:
z depending on the sev erity of the

accident,

z depending on the type of im pact, within

the range shown in the illustration.

Exception: The seat oc cup anc y recognition
system deactiv ates the a irba g on the

passenger’s side if the p assenger’s seat is
unoccupied – see page 48.
Examples of events triggering the airba g

system:
z Impact against a non-yielding obstacle:

the a irb ags are triggered at a low vehicle
speed .

Seats, interior

When triggered, the airbags inflate in

milliseconds to form a safety cushion for
the d riv er and passenger. The forwa rd

movement of the seat occupants is
check ed, thereb y sub stantially reducing

the risk of injury to the upp er body and
head .
No im pairment of view will occur, because
the a irb ags inflate and deflate so quickly

that it is often not ev en noticed in an
accident.

The airbag system will not be triggered in

the event of:
z the ignition being switched off,
z minor frontal collisions,
z accidents in which the vehicle overturns,
z collisions involving a sid e or rear impac t

where it would not be of benefit to the

occupants.

9

Warning

The airb ag system prov ides optimum
protection when the seat and backrest

are correctly adjusted.
Adjust the driver's sea t according to the

occupant's height such that, with the
driver sitting upright, the steering wheel is

held in the area of its up per spokes w ith
the driver's arms slig htly bent.
The passenger’s seat should be a s far
back as possible, with the backrest

upright – see pa ges 7, 37, 38.
Do not place the head, b od y, hands or

feet on the c ov er of the airbag systems.
Do not place any objects in the area in

which the airb ags inflate. Im portant
inform ation – see page 49.

9

Warning

The three-point seat belt must b e
correctly fitted (see page 42).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

47

Seats, interior

In add ition, the airbag system will not be
triggered for the passenger in versions with

seat occupancy recognition if:
z the passenger’s sea t is unoccupied .
Seat occupancy recognition – see page 48.

Control ind icator v for airbag systems

The opera tion of the airbag systems is
monitored electronica lly together with

seat occupancy recognition a nd the
belt tensioners and is indicated by control

indica tor v.
When the ignition is switched on, the

control indicator flashes for approx.
5 seconds. If it does not flash, does not go

out a fter 5 seconds or illuminates while
driving, there is a fault in the airba g

systems, the seat occupancy recognition or
the belt tensioners – see also pages 41, 48.

The system s may fail to d eploy in the event
of an accident.
Deploym ent of the airba gs is indicated by
continuous illumination of v.

The system’s integrated self-diagnostics

allows faults to b e q uick ly rem edied.
Consult a workshop .

9

Warning

Seat belts must always be worn. The
airb ag system serves to supplement the

three-point seat belts.
If you do not w ear your seat belt, you risk

being seriously injured, or even thrown
from the vehic le, in the ev ent of an

accident.
If an accident occurs, the belt helps to

maintain the correct seat position that
is required for the airbag system

to prov ide you with effectiv e protection.

9

Warning

Have the c ause of the fault rem edied by
a workshop .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

48

Seats, interior

Seat oc cupancy recognition
The seat occupancy recognition system

deactivates the passenger’s airbag if the
passenger’s sea t is not occupied.
Control indicators W and V for seat
occupancy recognition a re located on the

centre console. Both control indica tors
illuminate for app rox. 5 seconds after the

ignition is switched on, then either W or V
illuminates continuously.
If both control indicators illuminate
continuously, or neither illum inates after

the ignition is sw itc hed on, there is a fault in
the seat occupancy recognition system.

The airbag and b elt tensioner systems m ay
fail to deploy in the event of an accident or

may deploy unnecessarily. H ave cause of
fault remedied immediately by a

workshop.
Belt tensioners - see pa ge 41,

Airbag system s - see p age 45.

Control indica tor W illuminates

continuously as soon as the system ha s
detected that the passenger’s sea t is not

oc cup ied. The airbag for the passenger’s
seat is dea ctiv ated.
Pa y attention to the control indicators for
seat occupancy recognition.

9

Warning

If the pa ssenger’s seat is not occupied,
control indicator W m ust illuminate

continuously in the centre console after
the ignition is switched on.
If control indicator W does not illum inate
while driving, the airbag systems have

not been dea ctivated on the passenger’s
side and m ay deploy unnec essarily in the

event of an accident.
In this case, check that the seat bac krest

is not pushing down onto the seat
cushion. Recline back rest if necessary. If

control indicator W d oes not illuminate
after adjusting backrest, ha ve cause of

fault remedied by a workshop.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

49

Seats, interior

Control indicator V illuminates

continuously as soon as the system has
detected that the p assenger’s seat is

occupied and the passenger is correctly
seated. When a passeng er occupies the

passenger’s sea t, the a irb ag for the
passenger’s sea t is activated and may

infla te in the event of an accident.
Pay attention to the control indica tors for

seat occupancy recognition.

Importa nt
z Accessories a nd other objects must not

be affixed or stored in the area in which
the airbags inflate, since they could

cause injury if the a irb ags a re deployed.

z Do not place any objec ts between the

airbag systems and the vehicle
occupants; risk of injury.

z The airbag systems and belt tensioner

control electronics can be found in the

centre console area. In order to av oid
malfunctions, do not store mag netic

objects in this a rea.

z Do not stick anything on the steering

wheel or instrument pa nel, or cov er
either of these area s w ith other

materials.

z Use only a dry cloth or Interior/

Upholstery Cleaner to clea n the steering
wheel and instrument panel. Do not use

any agg ressive cleaning agents.

9

Warning

If the passenger’s seat is occupied,
control ind ic ator V must illuminate

continuously in the c entre console after
the ig nition is sw itc hed on.
If control indicator V does not illuminate
while driving, the airbag systems have

not been activa ted on the passeng er’s
side; risk of fa ta l injury.
In this case, turn off the ignition, ensure
the passenger’s seat ba ckrest is in an

upright position and the passenger is
sitting upright in the seat. Resta rt the

vehicle. If the control indicator does not
illuminate w hile driving, hav e ca use of

fault rem edied by a workshop .
If control indicator v for airbag systems

and b elt tensioners illum inates in the
instrument panel and W is illuminated in

the centre c onsole while the pa ssenger’s
seat is occupied, consult a workshop

immediately.

9

Warning

Never ca rry child restraint systems or
other objects on your lap; risk of fa ta l

injury.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seats, interior

z The airbag system s are triggered

depending on the severity of the

accident and the type of impa ct.

z Each airbag c an b e triggered only once,

which is indicated by continuous
illumination of control ind icator v. Once

trigg ered , an airbag must be replaced
without delay. Consult a work shop.

z The speeds, directions of movement and

deformation properties of the vehicles,

and the properties of the obstacle
concerned, d eterm ine the severity of the

accident and trig gering of the airb ags.
The degree of damag e to your v ehicle

and the resulting repa ir costs alone a re
not indicative that the criteria for

trigg ering of the airba gs were met.

z Do not m odify airbag system

com ponents, since this would render the
vehicle unroadworthy.

z Applicable safety directives must alwa ys

be observed when disposing of the

vehicle. For this reason, disposal should
be done by an a uthorised recycling

compa ny.

z Persons weighing less than 35 kg should

only travel in a vehicle suitable for fitting
a c hild restraint system. The use of child

restraint systems in your vehic le is not
rec om mended.

z Do not place any heavy objects on the

passenger’s seat when the seat is

unoccupied, otherwise the airbag for the
passenger’s seat may be trig gered

unnecessarily in the event of an
accident.

z To prevent m alfunctions in the seat

occupancy recognition system, do not

use protective cov ers or seat cushions on
the passenger’s seat.

Notes on loading the vehicle

z Secure heav y objects in the luggage

compartment. If objec ts are to be
stack ed, the hea vier objects should be

placed at the bottom. Unsecured objects
in the luggage compa rtm ent would be

thrown forward w ith g reat force in the
event of heavy braking, for exam ple.

z If heav y loads slip when the vehicle is

braked heavily or driven a round a bend ,

the handling of the v ehicle may cha nge.

z The warning triangle 3 and first-aid kit

(cushion) 3 should alwa ys be freely
