22 Instrument cluster hood -
removal and installation
Warning: These models have airbags. Always
disable the airbag system before working in
the vicinity of the impact sensors, steering
column or instrument panel to avoid the pos-
sibility of accidental deployment of the
airbag, which could cause personal injury
(see Chapter 12).
Removal
Refer to illustrations 22.3 and 22.6

Disconnect the negative battery cable
from the ground stud on the left shock tower
(see Chapter 5, Section 1).

Remove the dashboard left end cover
(see Section 21).

At the left end of the hood, remove the
screw securing the hood to the instrument
panel (see illustration).

Position the tilt steering wheel to its low-
est position.

Remove the dashboard center bezel
(see Section 21).

Remove the three screws attaching the
hood to the instrument panel (see illustra-
tion).

Pull the hood straight back to disengage
the eight clips. If the vehicle is equipped with
a Compass/Temperature Mini-Trip Computer
(CMTC), pull the hood rearward about three
inches and stop. Reach through the radio
opening and disconnect the CMTC wire con-
nector.

Remove the instrument cluster hood.
Installation

Installation is the reverse of removal.
Keep the forward edge of the hood down on
the instrument panel while sliding the hood
forward to engage the retaining clips.
23 Instrument panel - removal and
installation
Warning: These models have airbags. Always
disable the airbag system before working in
the vicinity of the impact sensors, steering
column or instrument panel to avoid the pos-
sibility of accidental deployment of the
airbag, which could cause personal injury
(see Chapter 12).
Note: It is not necessary, but it is suggested
to remove both front seats to allow additional
working space and lessen the chance of
damage to the seats during this procedure.
Removal
Refer to illustrations 23.2, 23.6, 23.7, 23.17,
23.18 and 23.19

Disconnect the negative battery cable
from the ground stud on the left shock tower
(see Chapter 5, Section 1).

Remove the dashboard right and left
end trim panels (see Section 21) (see illus-
tration).

Remove the floor console (see Section
26).

Disconnect the Airbag Control Module
(ACM).
5
Remove the instrument cluster hood
(see Section 22).
6
Remove the two screws securing the
cubby bin and withdraw it from the forward
console (see illustration).
7
Remove the five knee bolster mounting
screws and remove the knee bolster (see
illustration).

Open the glove box, squeeze the side-
walls in and hinge the glove box door all the
way down. Remove the passenger airbag
module (see Section 24). Warning: Carry the
airbag with the trim cover side FACING
AWAY from your body to minimize injury if the
airbag module accidentally deploys. Store the
airbag module aside in a safe, isolated loca-
tion with the trim cover side facing UP.

Remove the nine forward floor console
attaching screws and one push-in fastener at
forward driver's side.

Remove the forward floor console (see
Section 26).

Pull the driver's side under panel
silencer outboard off the distribution duct.

Remove the instrument panel top cover
(see Section 20).

Remove the heating and air conditioning
control module (see Chapter 11). Remove the
radio (see Chapter 12).

Remove the center distribution duct
screws from behind the radio and duct.
15
Locate and remove the three heating
and air conditioning unit attaching screws
securing the duct and instrument panel.
Remove the three screws securing the heat -

ing and air conditioning unit to the cross-car
beam.

Remove the five screws attaching the
instrument panel frame to the air distribution
duct and the two fasteners at the air duct
below the steering column.

The steering column must be lowered,
but before loosening the steering column
mounting nuts on a model equipped with a
tilt steering wheel, use the following proce-
dure to lock the tilt mechanism or it will not
operate correctly when installed (see illus-
tration).
a) Place the steering wheel straight ahead
and ensure the tilt mechanism is fully
locked.
b) Insert two 7/32-inch drill bits into the
two locking pin holes on the steering
column mounting bracket.
c) Loosen the two upper steering column
mounting nuts.
d) Loosen the two lower steering column
mounting nuts.

Remove the steering column mounting
nuts (see illustration). Lower and support
the column securely.

Disconnect the engine and body wiring
harness from the junction block/Body Control
Module (see illustration).

Remove the seven fasteners securing
the instrument panel to the cross-car beam.

Remove the fastener at the glove box
hinge to cowl area.

Remove the two fasteners at the center
support-to-floorpan bracket.
23
Remove the screw attaching the rear of
the heating and air conditioning unit to the
center support bracket.

Lift up the instrument panel and pull
rearward and withdraw it from the vehicle.
Installation
Refer to illustration 23.25
25 Installation is the reverse of removal not-
ing the following points (see illustration):
a) Raise the steering column onto the sup-
port bracket and loosely install the four
nuts.
b) Snugly tighten the lower nuts and
ensure the plastic capsules are seated in
the slots in the upper mounting bracket
and the studs are centered in the plastic
capsules.
c) Tighten the upper mounting nuts until
the upper mounting bracket is seated.
d) Tighten the four steering column mount-
ing nuts to 105 in-lbs.
e) On models equipped with a tilt steering
wheel, remove the drill bits from the
locking pin holes.
t) Turn the ignition switch to the Off posi-
tion, then turn it to the On position.
Check that the instrument cluster
AIRBAG lamp illuminates for six to eight
seconds and then goes out indicating
the airbag system is functioning prop-
erly. If the lamp fails to light, blinks on
and off or stays on, there is a malfunc-
tion in the airbag system. If any of these
conditions exist, the vehicle should be
diagnosed by a dealer service depart-
ment or other qualified repair shop.

24 Passenger airbag module -
removal and installation
Warning: Always disable the airbag system
before working in the vicinity of the impact
sensors, steering column or instrument panel
to avoid the possibility of accidental deploy-
ment of the airbag, which could cause per-
sonal injury (see Chapter 12).
Note: Refer to Chapter 10, steering wheel
removal, for driver's side airbag service pro-
cedures.
Removal

Disconnect the negative battery cable
from the ground stud on the left shock tower
(see Chapter 5, Section 1).

Open the glove box, squeeze the side -
walls in and hinge the glove box door all the
way down.

Remove the four nuts securing the
airbag to the top of the instrument panel (see
illustration).

Remove the two screws securing the
airbag to the support structure.

Lift the airbag module up and discon-
nect module electrical connector and remove
the airbag module. Warning: Carry the airbag
with the trim cover side FACING AWAY from
your body to minimize injury if the airbag
module accidentally deploys. Store the airbag
module aside in a safe, isolated location with
the trim cover side facing UP.
Installation

Installation is the reverse of removal.
Ensure that the electrical connector is joined
securely. Tighten the screws and nuts
securely.

Turn the ignition switch to the Off posi-
tion, then turn it to the On position. Check
that the instrument cluster AIRBAG lamp illu-
minates for six to eight seconds and then
goes out indicating the airbag system is func-
tioning properly. If the lamp fails to light,
blinks on and off or stays on, there is a mal-
function in the airbag system. If any of these
conditions exist, the vehicle should be diag-
nosed by a dealer service department or
other qualified repair shop.
25 Steering column covers -
removal and installation
Warning: These models have airbags. Always
disable the airbag system before working in
the vicinity of the impact sensors, steering
column or instrument panel to avoid the pos-
sibility of accidental deployment of the
airbag, which could cause personal injury
(see Chapter 12).
Caution: These covers can be easily
scratched, take care when removing them to
avoid damage.

Disconnect the negative battery cable

26 Center console - removal and
installation
Warning: These models have airbags. Always
disable the airbag system before working in
the vicinity of the impact sensors, steering
column or instrument panel to avoid the pos-
sibility of accidental deployment of the
airbag, which could cause personal injury
(see Chapter 12).
Caution: The center console can be easily
scratched, take care in removing the assem-
bly to avoid damage.
Note: The center console on these vehicles is
composed of two separate sections.
Floor console

Disconnect the negative battery cable
from the ground stud on the left shock tower

Completely raise the parking brake lever.

On vehicles equipped with a manual
transaxle, pull the gear shift boot down away
from the knob to expose the knob retaining
clips. Pry the clips away from the shift lever

button which is bonded to the windshield
and is held in place by a set screw -

transaxle, remove the shift lever set screw
and lift the handle assembly off the shift lever
(see illustration). Using a screwdriver, care-
fully pry the shift position indicator bezel from
the floor console and disconnect the electri-
cal connector.

Remove the two screws securing the
front of the console (see illustration).

At the rear of the floor console, pry off
the trim plugs and remove the two screws
from the console (see illustration). Note: On
vehicles equipped with a storage box/arm
rest type console, the rear attaching screws
are located inside the storage area.

Maneuver the floor console up and over
the shift lever and parking brake handle and
remove it from vehicle.

Forward console

Unscrew the screws securing the stor-
age bin and remove it from the console (see
illustration).

forward console to the gear selector mount

heater/air conditioning controls, storage bin
area and panel support braces.

With all fasteners removed, carefully
withdraw the forward console from the vehi-

27 Mirrors - removal and installation

remove the set screw, then slide the mirror
up off the button on the windshield (see illus-

Lift up the plastic trim cap on the wind-
shield wiper arms, then detach the wiper arm
retaining nuts and remove the wiper arms
(see illustrations).

Peel off the hood rubber sealing strip
from the cowl edge (see illustration).

Remove the two retaining screws on
each side of the cowl cover and carefully lift it
from the vehicle (see illustration).

Remove the lower seat cushion.

Remove the bolts holding the seat
backs and belts to the floorpan (see illustra-
tion).

Open the child seat and remove the lin-
ing. Remove the two retaining bolts within the
li ning area.

Lift up the seat back to disengage the
hooks from the slots and remove the seat
back from the vehicle.

Remove the lower seat cushion (see

Remove the bolts securing the bottoms
of the each side bolster to the floorpan. Lift
each bolster up to detach it from the retaining
hook and remove it from the vehicle (see

bolts.

Release the folding seat latch and
remove the seat back from the vehicle.
