ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE TOO HIGH
The warning light switches on when the ignition key is turned to MAR, but it should switch off after a few
seconds.
The warning light comes on, on some versions along with a message on the display, when the engine is
overheated.
In normal driving conditions
: stop the car, switch off the engine and check that the water level in the
reservoir is not below the MIN mark. In this case, wait for the engine to cool down, then slowly and carefully
open the cap, top up with coolant and check that the level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the
reservoir itself. Also check visually for any fluid leaks. If, when restarting, the warning light switches on again,
contact a Fiat Dealership.
If the car is used under demanding conditions
(e.g. towing trailers uphill or fully loaded): slow down
and, if the warning light stays on, stop the car. Wait for 2 or 3 minutes with the engine running and slightly
accelerated to further favour the coolant circulation. Then stop the engine. Check that the coolant level is
before switching it off.
red
“DUALDRIVE” ELECTRIC POWER STEERING FAILURE
When the key is turned to MAR, the warning light switches on but it should switch off after a few seconds.
If the warning light stays on, on some versions along with a dedicated message on the display, you may not
have steering assistance and the effort required to operate the steering wheel could be notably increased;
steering is, however, possible.
In this case, contact a Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT In some circumstances, factors independent of the electric power steering could cause the
warning light on the instrument panel to switch on. In this case, stop the car immediately (should it be in
motion), stop the engine for about 20 seconds and then restart the engine. If the warning light, on some
versions along with a dedicated message on the display, remains on, contact a Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT NOTE The steering must be initialised after disconnecting the conventional battery. The
warning light turns on to indicate this. To carry out this procedure, simply turn the steering wheel all the way
from one end to the other or drive in a straight line for about a hundred metres.

What it means
amber
EOBD/INJECTION SYSTEM FAILURE
In normal conditions, when the ignition key is turned to MAR the warning light switches on, but it should
switch off as soon as the engine is started.
If the warning light remains on or switches on whilst driving, the injection system is not working properly; in
particular, if the warning light switches on steadily, this indicates a malfunction in the supply/ignition system
that could cause excessive exhaust emissions, a possible loss of performance, poor driveability and high fuel
consumption.
Under these conditions, the vehicle can continue travelling at moderate speed without demanding excessive
effort from the engine. Prolonged use of the car with the warning light on fixed may cause damage: contact
a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.
The warning light switches off if the malfunction disappears, but is still stored by the system.
IMPORTANT For petrol engines, if the warning light flashes, the catalytic converter may be damaged. In this
case, it is necessary to release the accelerator pedal to lower the speed of the engine until the warning light
stops flashing; continue the journey at moderate speed, trying to avoid driving conditions that may cause
further flashing and contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.
29)
HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE
(for versions/markets, where provided)
In the event of a hybrid system failure, all the segments of the battery charge level indicator turn off, and the

EOBD SYSTEM
The EOBD system (European On Board
Diagnosis) carries out a continuous
diagnosis of the components of the car
related to emissions. It also alerts the
driver about component deterioration
by switching on the warning light
on the instrument panel and the
displaying of a relevant message (for
versions/markets, where provided)
(see the chapter “Warning lights and
messages”).
The aim of the EOBD system
(European On Board Diagnosis) is to:
monitor system efficiency;
indicate an increase in emissions;
indicate the need to replace
damaged components.
The system also has a connector that
can be interfaced with appropriate
equipment, which makes it possible
to read the error codes stored in the
control unit together with a series
of specific parameters for engine
operation and diagnosis.
WARNING After eliminating the failure,
to check the system completely, Fiat
Dealerships run a bench test and, if
necessary, road tests which may also
call for a long journey.

ACTIVE SAFETY
SYSTEMS
ABS (Anti-lock Braking
System)
This system, which is an integral part
of the braking system, prevents one
or more wheels from locking and
slipping in all road surface conditions,
irrespective of the intensity of the
braking action, ensuring that the
vehicle can be controlled even during
emergency braking.
WARNING To obtain the maximum
efficiency of the braking system, a
bedding-in period of about 500 km is
needed: during this period it is better to
avoid sharp, repeated and prolonged
braking.
The ABS also integrates the following
systems:
EBD (Electronic Braking Force
Distribution), MSR (Motor
Schleppmoment Regelung) and
MBA (Mechanical Brake Assist) (for
versions/markets, where provided).
System intervention
The driver can feel that the ABS system
has come into action because the
brake pedal pulsates slightly and the
system gets noisier: this is entirely
normal with the system operating.
49) 50) 51) 52) 53) 54) 55) 56) 57)
MSR (Motor Schleppmoment
Regelung) SYSTEM
The MSR system is an integral part of
the ABS, that intervenes, if there is
a sudden change to a lower gear,
restoring torque to the engine, thereby
preventing excessive drive at the drive
wheels which, especially in poor grip
conditions, could lead to a loss in
stability of the vehicle.
MBA (Mechanical Brake Assist)
SYSTEM
(for versions/markets, where provided)
This system (which cannot be
deactivated) recognises emergency
braking conditions according to the
speed of operation of the brake pedal
and provides an additional hydraulic
braking pressure to support that
provided by the driver. This allows
faster and more powerful operation of
the braking system.
ESC (Electronic Stability
Control) SYSTEM
(for versions/markets, where provided)
This is an electronic system that
controls car stability in the event of loss
of tyre grip, helping maintain directional
control. The system is capable of
recognising potentially dangerous
situations in terms of the stability and
intervenes automatically on the brakes
in a differentiated manner for the four
wheels in order to provide a stabilising
torque. The ESC system switches
on automatically when the engine is
started and cannot be switched off.
The ESC system also includes the
following subsystems:
HH (Hill Holder)
ASR
HBA
HDC
System intervention
The intervention of the system is
indicated by the flashing of the
ESC
warning light on the instrument panel,
to inform the driver that the vehicle is in
critical stability and grip conditions.
58) 59) 60) 61) 62) 63)
HH (Hill Holder) SYSTEM
This system is an integral part of the
ESC system and facilitates starting on
slopes.
It is automatically activated in the
following conditions:
uphill: vehicle stationary on a road
with a gradient higher than 5%,
engine running, brake pressed and
transmission in neutral or gear other
than reverse engaged;
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAFETY
74
downhill: car stationary on a road
with a gradient higher than 5%, motor
running, brake pressed and reverse
gear engaged. When setting off, the
ESC system control unit maintains the
braking pressure on the wheels until
the torque necessary for starting is
reached, or in any case for a maximum
of 2 seconds, allowing your right foot to
be moved easily from the brake pedal
to the accelerator.
When the 2 seconds have elapsed,
without starting, the system is
automatically deactivated, gradually
releasing the braking pressure.
During this release stage, the typical
mechanical brake release noise can be
heard, indicating that the car is about
to move.
NOTE The Hill Holder system is not
active with parking brake engaged.
WARNING The Hill Holder system is
not a parking brake, therefore do not
leave the vehicle without activating the
handbrake, switching off the engine,
and engaging first gear, with the vehicle
parked in safe conditions.
ASR (AntiSlip
Regulation) SYSTEM
It is an integral part of the ESC system.
It is automatically activated in the
case of drive wheels slipping, loss of
grip on wet roads (aquaplaning) and
acceleration on slippery, snowy or icy
roads, etc.
Depending on the slipping conditions,
two different control systems are
activated:
if the slipping involves both drive
wheels, the ASR intervenes reducing
the power transmitted by the engine;
if the slipping only involves one of the
drive wheels, it intervenes automatically
braking the wheel that is slipping.
Engagement/disengagement of the
system
The ASR system switches on
automatically each time the engine is
started.
Whilst driving, the ASR can be
switched off and subsequently
switched on again by pressing the ASR
OFF button fig. 82.
82
F1D0038
On some versions, the intervention of
the system is indicated by a dedicated
message shown on the display.
When the system is not active, the LED
on the button ASR OFF turns on and,
on some versions, a message appears
on the display.
When the ASR is deactivated whilst
driving, the next time the car is started
the ASR is automatically activated.
When travelling on snowy roads with
snow chains, it may be helpful to turn
the ASR off: in fact, in these conditions,
the driving wheels skidding when
setting off gives you better traction.
64) 65) 66) 67) 68)
HBA (Hydraulic Brake
Assist) SYSTEM
The HBA system is designed to
improve the car’s braking capacity
during emergency braking. The system
detects an emergency braking by
monitoring the speed and strength with
which the brake pedal is pressed,
thereby applying the optimal brake
pressure.
This can reduce the braking distance:
the HBA system therefore completes
the ABS.
Maximum assistance from the HBA
system is obtained pressing the
brake pedal very quickly. In addition,
the brake pedal must be pressed
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
75
continuously during braking, avoiding
intermittent presses, to benefit from the
system.
Do not reduce pressure on the
brake pedal until braking is no longer
necessary.
The HBA system is deactivated when
the brake pedal is released.
69) 70) 71)
ELD (Electronic Locking
Differential) SYSTEM
(Panda Cross 4x4 and Panda 4x4
versions)
The ELD system allows the drive force
to be evenly distributed over the same
axle when one or both wheels are
slipping.
The ELD acts by braking the wheels
with poor grip (or those slipping more
than the others), thereby transferring
the drive force to those which have
greater grip on the ground. The system
operates at speeds below 50 km/h.
Above this speed, it is automatically
deactivated and it is reactivated when
the speed falls below 50 km/h.
The activation of the ELD system
involves the following functions being
switched on:
inhibition of the ASR function, in
order to fully exploit the engine torque;
differential lock effect on the front
and rear axles, via the braking system,
to improve drive on uneven surfaces.
Enabling the system
To arrange operation of the ELD
system press button (A) fig. 83 (Panda
4x4 versions) or turn the ring fig. 85 to
the right (Panda Cross 4x4 versions)
and keep it in this position until LED (2)
on the selector lights up.
