1. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head.
2. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
IMPORTANT: The cylinder head bolts can NOT be used again. Install NEW cylinder head
bolts during assembly.
NOTE:
After removal, place the cylinder head on two wood blocks to prevent
damage to the sealing surfaces.

3. Remove the cylinder head.

4. Remove the gasket.
5. Discard the gasket.
6. Discard the cylinder head bolts.
VALVE LIFTER REMOVAL
J 3049-A Valve Lifter Remover. See Special Tools and Equipment .

1. Remove the valve lifter guide bolts (211).
2. Remove the valve lifters and guide.

3. Use the J 3049-A or equivalent in order to remove the valve lifters, if required. See Special Tools and
Equipment .
IMPORTANT: Some valve lifters may be stuck in their bores because of gum or varnish
deposits.
