Inspect the piston ring end gap
1
Insert the piston ring into the cylinder bore

Using a piston, push the piston ring a little beyond the bottom of the ring travel, 105 mm
(4 13 in ) from the top of the cylinder block

Using a feeler gauge, measure the end gap
Standard end gap
END GAP SPECIFICATION
End Gap
Specified Condition
No 1 piston ring 0 300 to 0 400 mm (0 0118 to 0 0157 in )
No 2 piston ring 0 400 to 0 550 mm (0 0157 to 0 0217 in )
Oil ring (Side rail) 0 130 to 0 380 mm (0 00511 to 0 0150 in )

Maximum end gap
END GAP SPECIFICATION
If the end gap is greater than the maximum, replace the piston ring If the end gap is greater
than the maximum even with a new piston ring, rebore all 8 cylinders or replace the cylinder
block sub-assembly

INSPECT CONNECTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY
a
Using a rod aligner and feeler gauge, check the connecting rod alignment

Check if the connecting rod is bent
Maximum bend: 0.05 mm (0.00197 in.) per 100 mm (3.94 in.)
If the bend is greater than the maximum, replace the connecting rod sub-assembly

Check if the connecting rod is twisted
End Gap
Specified Condition
No 1 piston ring 1 10 mm (0 0433 in )
No 2 piston ring 1 30 mm (0 0512 in )
Oil ring (Side rail) 0 90 mm (0 0354 in )

Maximum twist: 0.15 mm (0.00591 in.) per 100 mm (3.94 in.)
If the twist is greater than the maximum, replace the connecting rod sub-assembly

INSPECT CRANKSHAFT
a
Inspect for circle runout

Place the crankshaft on V-blocks
2
Using a dial indicator, measure the circle runout at the center journal

Maximum circle runout: 0.04 mm (0.00157 in.)
If the circle runout is greater the maximum, replace the crankshaft

Inspect the main journals and crank pins
1
Using a micrometer, measure the diameter of each main journal and crank pin

Check each main journal and crank pin for taper and out of round as shown below
Maximum taper and out of round: 0.02 mm (0.000787 in.)
If the taper and out of round is greater than the maximum, replace the crankshaft

INSPECT CONNECTING ROD BOLT
a
Using a vernier caliper, measure the tension portion of the connecting rod bolt
Standard diameter: 7.200 to 7.300 mm (0.283 to 0.287 in.)
Minimum diameter: 7.00 mm (0.276 in.)
If the diameter is less than the minimum, replace the bolt
Main journal 66 988 to 67 000 mm (2 6373 to 2 6378 in )
Crank pin 51 982 to 52 000 mm (2 0465 to 2 0472 in )
