NG: GO TO FUEL INJECTOR CIRCUIT
OK: Go to Next Step
11. CHECK FUEL INJECTOR OF MISFIRING CYLINDER
a. Check the injector injection [whether fuel volume is high or low, and whether injection pattern is
poor] (see INSPECTION ).
NG: REPLACE FUEL INJECTOR ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step
12. CHECK AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
a. Check the air induction system for vacuum leakage (see ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION ).
OK: No leakage from air induction system.
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step
13. CHECK VALVE TIMING (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )
NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING (See REASSEMBLY )
OK: Go to Next Step
14. CHECK FUEL LEAK
a. Check the fuel leak (see ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION ).
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE FUEL LEAKAGE POINT
OK: Go to Next Step
15. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE SWITCHING SYSTEM
a. Check the Fuel Pressure Switching System (see FUEL PRESSURE SWITCHING SYSTEM ).
HINT:
If the problem area cannot be determined by checking the fuel pressure switching system, proceed
to the next step.
16. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP) (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )

17. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MAF) (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )
NG: REPLACE MASS AIR FLOW METER (See REMOVAL )
OK: REPLACE ECM (See REMOVAL )
18. CHECK AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
a. Check the air induction system for vacuum leakage (see ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION ).
OK: No leakage from air induction system.
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step
19. CHECK VALVE TIMING (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )
NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING (See REASSEMBLY )
OK: Go to Next Step
20. CHECK FUEL LEAK
a. Check the fuel leak (see ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION ).
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE FUEL LEAKAGE POINT
OK: Go to Next Step
21. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE SWITCHING SYSTEM
a. Check the Fuel Pressure Switching System (See FUEL PRESSURE SWITCHING SYSTEM ).
HINT:
If the problem area cannot be determined by checking the fuel pressure switching system, proceed
to the next step.
22. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP) (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )
NG: REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step

23. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MAF) (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE )
NG: REPLACE MASS AIR FLOW METER (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step
24. INSPECT SPARK PLUG
a. Remove the ignition coil and the spark plug of the misfiring cylinder (see REMOVAL ).
b. Measure the spark plug electrode gap.
Standard gap: 1.0 to 1.1 mm (0.0394 to 0.0433 in.)

c. Check the electrode for carbon deposits.
Recommended spark plug:
SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATION
NG: REPLACE SPARK PLUG (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to Next Step
25. CHECK FOR SPARKS AND IGNITION
a. Disconnect the injector connectors to prevent the engine from starting.

NOTE:
If the electrode gap is larger than standard, replace the spark plug.
Do not adjust the electrode gap.
CAUTION: Always disconnect all injector connectors.

b. Remove the ignition coil from the cylinder head (see REMOVAL ).
c. Install the spark plug onto the ignition coil.
d. Attach the spark plug assembly to the cylinder head.

e. Crank the engine for less than 2 seconds and check the spark.
OK: Sparks jump across electrode gap.
f. Install the ignition coil.
g. Reconnect the injector connectors.
NG: Go to step 29
OK: Go to Next Step
26. CHECK CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE
a. Measure the cylinder compression pressure of the misfiring cylinder (see ON-VEHICLE
INSPECTION ).
NG: REPAIR ENGINE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF LOW COMPRESSION
OK: Go to Next Step
27. INSPECT ECM TERMINAL OF MISFIRING CYLINDER (#10, #20, #30, #40, #50, #60, #70
AND/OR #80 VOLTAGE)
a. Disconnect the D74 ECM connector.
NOTE:
Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.
