REMOVE STARTER BRUSH HOLDER ASSEMBLY
a
Remove the 2 screws, O-ring and end cover from the starter yoke

Remove the O-ring from the starter yoke

Using a screwdriver, hold the spring back and disconnect the brush from the brush holder

Disconnect the 4 brushes and remove the brush holder

REMOVE STARTER ARMATURE ASSEMBLY

Remove the starter armature from the starter yoke
INSPECTION

INSPECT STARTER ASSEMBLY
a
Perform pull-in test
1
Remove the nut, then disconnect the field coil lead wire from terminal C
2
Connect the battery to the magnetic switch as shown Check that the clutch pinion gear
moves outward
If the clutch pinion gear does not move, replace the magnet starter switch assembly

NOTE:
Check that the positive (+) lead wires are not grounded.
NOTE:
The following tests must be done within 3 to 5 seconds to prevent the coil
from burning out.

Perform holding test

With the battery connected as above with the clutch pinion gear out, disconnect the negative
(-) lead from terminal C Check that the pinion gear remains out
If the clutch pinion gear returns inward, replace the magnet starter switch assembly

Inspect clutch pinion gear return
1
Disconnect the negative (-) lead from the starter body Check that the clutch pinion gear
returns inward
If the clutch pinion gear does not return inward, replace the magnet starter switch assembly

Perform the operation test without load
1
Connect the field coil lead wire to terminal C
Torque: 5.9 N*m (60 kgf*cm, 52 in.*lbf)

Grip the starter in a vise
3
Connect the battery and an ammeter to the starter as shown
4
Check that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily with the clutch pinion gear extended
5
Check that the ammeter reads the specified current

Specified current:
90 A or less at 11.5 V
If the result is not as specified, replace the starter assembly

INSPECT STARTER ARMATURE ASSEMBLY

Inspect the commutator for an open circuit
1
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below
Standard resistance
COMMUTATOR FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
If the result is not as specified, replace the armature assembly

Inspect the commutator for a short circuit
1
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below
