Overview
S-MAX/Galaxy 2006.5 (02/2006-)
Description and Operation
Cooling and lubrication
The
TC (turbocharger)
is cooled by the engine coolant and oil circuit. The engine oil circuit
also lubricates the turbine bearings.
Closed-loop control
The
TC
is controlled on the exhaust side by the wastegate control valve and on the charge
air side by the turbocharger bypass valve. This double control is required in order to
achieve optimal turbocharging and optimal response under all operating conditions.
The wastegate control valve is closed when de-energised. The entire incoming flow of
exhaust gas flows through the exhaust turbine and drives it. As soon as the maximum
permissible charge pressure is exceeded, the wastegate control valve opens and guides
part of the flow of exhaust gas into the exhaust system.
The recirculated air valve ensures short-term adjustments to the charge pressure on the
charge air side. Sudden closing of the throttle plate causes backpressure in the intake tract
between the throttle plate and compressor wheel. This results in sharp braking of the
compressor wheel and thereby the turbine shaft. When the vehicle is accelerated again, this
results in a significant loss of charge pressure or power (turbo-hole). The recirculated air
valve prevents this backpressure by opening the bypass. The bypass guides the charge
pressure back to the intake side of the compressor. The turbine speed remains constant.
The recirculated air valve is controlled by a vacuum line. This vacuum line is connected to
the intake manifold between the engine and the throttle plate. When the throttle plate is
suddenly closed, an increased vacuum occurs in the intake manifold. This causes the
recirculated air valve to open the bypass.
Repair and maintenance instructions
Oil return tube: If the
TC
is removed, a new
TC
oil return tube must be fitted during
installation.
Turbocharger: The
TC
and the exhaust manifold are one unit and must not be separated
from each other. In the event of damage, the entire unit must be replaced.
