Stoplamp/side light

The tail lamps are divided into two parts and differ both in terms of installation and the
bulbs between SAV and LMV versions.

Backup lamps

On the SAV version, the backup lamps are automatically switched off by the GEM after 10
minutes, if the vehicle is not moving. This is intended as an overheating protection for the
tail lamps.

Stoplamp

The additional high-mounted stoplamp is mounted in the middle of the tailgate above the
rear window and also incorporates the washer nozzle for the rear window. A W16W glass
base bulb is used.

The stoplamps are switched on via the stoplamp switch on the brake pedal as soon as the
brake pedal is actuated.

On vehicles with an electronic parking brake or adaptive speed control system the
stoplamps are additionally actuated via the CAN bus.

Parking lamps

The parking lamps are switched on for the relevant side of the vehicle via the turn signal
lever when the ignition switch is in position "0". In addition, there is also a parking lights
function on the light switch which can be used to switch on all side lights.

Rear fog lamp

The light switch has been modified and now includes electronic controls. The light switch is
connected to the GEM via the LIN bus.

After switching the ignition off and back on again the front fog lamps and the rear fog lamp
are deactivated. They then need to be switched back on again if they are required.

Lamp failure detection

Failure of the following lighting components is indicated to the driver via the display in the
instrument panel:

Dipped beam headlamps
Stop lamp
Rear fog lamp
Trailer turn signal lamp (only in trailer mode; controlled by the trailer module)
Trailer stoplamp (only in trailer mode; controlled by the trailer module)

The indicator lamp in the instrument cluster flashes at twice the normal frequency to
indicate failure of the turn signal lamp.

Malfunction of the bulb control module on vehicles with adaptive front lighting is indicated
via the display in the instrument cluster.

Diagnosis and Testing

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Section 417-01, for schematic and connector
information.

Special Tool(s)

Inspection and Testing

NOTE: The generic electronic module (GEM) is part of the central junction box (CJB).
NOTE: Before reading out the vehicle-specific data make sure that all electrical
connections in the vehicle are reconnected so that the module and WDS can communicate
correctly.

1. 1. Verify the customer concern.

2. 2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical (or mechanical) damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

3. 3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause

(if possible) before proceeding to the next step. CHECK system operates correctly

4. 4. If the concern persists after the visual inspection, PERFORM a fault diagnosis with

the diagnostic unit and RECTIFY any displayed faults in accordance with the
displayed fault description. CHECK system operates correctly

5. 5. For vehicles with no stored fault(s), PROCEED in accordance with the symptom

chart according to the fault symptom.

6. 6. After testing or rectifying the fault and after completion of operations, READ OUT

the fault memories of all vehicle modules and DELETE any stored faults. READ OUT
all fault memories again after a road test.
