Applies to vehicles used for towing a trailer, using a camper, or car-top carrier, operated in dusty
conditions, off-road operation or with extensive idling and/or low-speed driving for long distances.
As in heavy commercial use such as taxi, patrol car or delivery.
(2)
Replace at 150,000 miles if not replaced within last 100,000 miles.
(3)
If vehicle is driven in dusty conditions or used under special operating conditions, inspect and
replace as required.
(4)
Green engine coolant replaced at 45,000 miles, and then every 30,000 miles thereafter.
(5)
Yellow engine coolant replaced at 5 years or 100,000 miles (which ever comes first). After initial
change, replace Yellow coolant every 3 years or 50,000 miles.
(6)
Applies to F250-550 Pickup operated under normal conditions. Inspect and lubricate front hub
needle bearings every 60,000 miles. Replace as necessary.
(7)
Applies to F250-550 Pickup only. If used for towing, inspect and lubricate front hub needle bearings
every 30,000 miles. If operated in off-road conditions, inspect and lubricate front hub needle
bearings every 15,000 miles. Replace as necessary.
(8)
For propane vehicles, drain coalescent fuel filter bowl and replace filter every 30,000 miles. For
NGV, drain coalescent fuel filter bowl and replace filter every 25,000 miles.
(9)
Fuel tanks for natural gas and propane vehicles, should be inspected every 30,000 miles and natural
gas fuel tanks must be replaced every 15 years.
(10)
On light-duty Pickups under 6000 GVW, replace every 100,000 miles. On all trucks over 6000
GVW, replace every 120,000 miles.
(11)
On Police or Taxi models, or F450-550 Pickup commercial vehicles, replace every 100,000 miles.
If operated at or near maximum GVW, in dusty conditions or off-road, replace every 50,000 miles.
On all other RWD vehicles without synthetic lubricant and operated under special conditions,

BELT ADJUSTMENT
Belt tension is set by automatic belt tensioners and is not adjustable. Tension is within specification if the
tensioner is within the indicator markings.
MECHANICAL CHECKS
ENGINE COMPRESSION
Diesel Engines
To diagnose possible cylinder compression loss, perform CRANKCASE PRESSURE TEST under ENGINE
PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSIS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTS - DIESEL article and/or
KOER CYLINDER CONTRIBUTION SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST in appropriate SELF-
DIAGNOSTICS - DIESEL article.
Gasoline Engines
Check engine compression with engine at normal operating temperature, all spark plugs removed (on dual
plugs, remove exhaust side only), and throttle wide open. Ensure crankcase is full and oil is of correct viscosity.
With compression gauge installed, use remote starter switch to crank engine.
Crank engine at least 5 revolutions, and record highest reading. Repeat procedure for all cylinders, using
approximately same number of revolutions. Lowest compression reading should not be less than 75 percent of
highest compression reading. No cylinder compression reading should be less than 100 psi (7 kg/cm
2
).
VALVE CLEARANCE
replace every 3000 miles or 3 months (which ever comes first).
(12)
See SUPERCHARGER under AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM.
(13)
On vehicles equipped with 4R100 transmission, replace at 30,000 miles. On all other vehicles,
replace A/T fluid at 150,000 miles.
(14)
Inspect air filter every 7,500 miles, replace as necessary.
(15)
Dana axles using non-synthetic lubricants only.
NOTE:
On diesel engines, a mechanical compression testing procedure is not available
from manufacturer.
NOTE:
DO NOT use ignition switch to crank engine. Fuel injection and coils will
activate and may cause damage.
NOTE:
All models are equipped with hydraulic valve lifters; valve adjustment is not
required. If valves are noisy or incorrect clearance is suspected, worn
